JB industries vs Ritchie YJ vs Lab Pumps (longevity, quality, etc)

Hi guys,

I've been struggling to get my system up and running. I initially ordered a very old but good condition 7CFM from JB industries. This took about 3 minutes to hit full vac, so I sold it and bought the new platinum 7 CFM from JB.....This came from Ebay and is not in working condition, so Ive had to send it back for a refund......

I am confused as this Platinum pump was in Excellent condition, still shining..But it was clearly broken, makes a loud loud gargling noise, shakes the house...

Maybe buying used vac pumps is just not a good option. I feel like you never know what the prior owner was using it for, and therefor finding a used but near perfect working vac pump might be a crapshoot.

I am going to buy something new, 500$ is my tops. Id like a 7CFM or 6CFM. In a lab grade pump like an edwards this is not going to get me very far, even with a used one....So I am thinking that these are out of the question for me but who knows.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Or has anyone had great luck buying a used pump before? If so, would one recommend YJ over JB or vice versa?

Any input would be great, I am so frustrated I cant even begin to tell you.

The farthest I got with my new Platinum was 29 HG after about 2.5 minutes, which is just not cool....... So maybe just 2 bad apples in a row? Or maybe a very clear message being sent my way. lol thanks for anyone who can shed some light.

Sounds like some bad apples on your end. Personally, I would never buy a pump used but that's just me. Our yj superevac is a solid machine, the vac gauge moves faster than a second hand on a clock when pulling on a .9 cu. ft..

Did you calibrate your gauge brand new platinum and eliminators should pull 10-15 micron and are very reliable pumps. YJ is also builds good pumps. Used pumps are normally unreliable and very little cost savings when you consider they get used alot in HVAC before they sell it to buy a new one. I try to avoid off brands due to use of plastic parts in pump that fail harbor freight pumps are a good example of this.

also if you leave ballast valve open it will take longer and never achieve full vacuum close it once reaction slows its meant to help remove water vapor and gases during early stages of vac down

HST youre right, in a 5gal I should see full vac in under a minute maybe under 45 sec.

Cya thanks, this is why I ultimately went with a used but well maintained JB. My 10-15 yr old JB ran nicer than this one does for over a year before I sold it lol.

Might have been damaged in shipping, luckily I'm getting full refund.

Brand new it is, just not sure what to buy. JB or YJ, is the extra 1 CFM a no brainer or no difference? Will rule out a used Lab pump for now based on my experiences....

I would buy a used vacuum pump off a stranger after personally testing it, but not off the internet, because there are too many unanswered questions about why they are selling it and too hard to resolve issues once you discover that they have been less than forth coming.

The pumps also don't cost that much from a relative stand point. We are still getting reliable service from our original $200 CPS VP6S, which is four or five years old and has seen steady service.

<Major Edittt>

I did the boiling water test, and at around 27 on my gauge I got crazyyy bubble action. I didnt want to suck any more water vapor so I closed the valve as soon as the action started, when I closed it, the bubbles stopped. Normally with my other tests/pumps this took much longer.

I feel like at just over 28 Im seeing the normal action on a slab that I would see at 29+ with the Robinair. Is this possible my gauge is reading differently with the bigger pump?

is 1:25 -2min to pull a full vac on a 5gal chamber with a 7CFM Platinum a joke ? Its fast, I just expected faster, and quieter. Maybe this is just right.

Edit-Thanks GW !

It took 45 sec to pull a muffin, and then took another 25 seconds to hit just over 28Hg on my gauge, but Im seeing full action as I have it sealed off.

My only issue now is how loud this pump is ! lol maybe I just have never seen one pulling vacuum only running but I thought this would be waay more quiet.

2 stage pumps are louder than single stage, on JB I normally hit hardware store and buy a male hose to male npt fitting and thread in handle and route hose away from area cuts noise level alot and displaces solvent away from the pump area.

I put a ballast valve at the chamber using a compressor drain valve, t-type work best for vacuum and control ballast at the chamber to control muffin so initial vac down takes a bit but with ballast closed my empty 2 gallon clears fast with 3/8" hose and not as fast with 1/4", as long as oil in pump is still good
