U.K. criminals ‘using unmanned drones and infrared cameras to find illegal cannabis f

"Don't drone me bro!"
Rippers in the U.K. going high tech:

"

Criminals in Shropshire have reportedly started using unmanned drones fitted with heat-seeking cameras to steal from and extort illegal cannabis farms.

Apparently taking a leaf out of the book of the police themselves, violent robbers said that the growers make perfect targets because the victims will not report incidents to the authorities.

According to a local newspaper, there has been a huge surge in the number of hidden cannabis farms across Halesowen, Cradley Heath and Oldbury, towns on the outskirts of rural Shropshire some seven miles from central Birmingham.

They require hydroponic lights for the marijuana plants to grow – and the huge amounts of excess heat given off make them easily spottable for a would-be criminal in the know.

One such man, an unnamed 33-year-old, told the Halesowen News that after finding a property with a cannabis farm he and his crew either burgle or “tax” the victim.

“They are fair game,” he said. “It is not like I'm using my drone to see if people have nice televisions. I am just after drugs to steal and sell, if you break the law then you enter me and my drone's world.

“Half the time we don’t even need to use violence to get the crop. Growing cannabis has gone mainstream and the people growing it are not gangsters, especially in places like Halesowen, Cradley Heath and Oldbury.”

The man added that he had started out with the practice in the more built-up area of Handsworth where “you never know who you are messing with”, but came out to leafier suburbs because its “safer and easier to fly”.
Tom Watson, the local MP for West Bromwich East and the chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on drones, told the newspaper that the story shows “the proliferation of drone technology which can be used for both good and bad”.

He said: “It is no surprise enterprising criminals would want to get the upper hand in the criminal underworld by using drones. As a society we will be dealing with the impact of drones on our laws and regulations for years to come.

“And it is time the Government started listening about privacy concerns about the misuse of drones.”

In 2012 the Association of Chief Police Officers reported that 21 cannabis farms were found every day by police in Britain, and that the number of farms had doubled since 2008.

It said the UK is at “significant risk” from criminal gangs who cultivate cannabis on a commercial scale, and that there was also growing evidence of the “taxing” and stealing of crops as well as the use of “debt bondage” to control cultivators.

I smell bullshit.

When do "violent criminals" write letters to newspapers to inform them of how they operate?

In my opinion this story is a mix of fantasy and gross generalization.

The british press is well known for its distortion of the truth and outright lies to control the public with scare campaigns and fear mongering.

"Dope heads cause crime. Watch out because marijuana brings violence and scary bad people".

When people are scared they feel powerless and are easier to manipulate.

While I agree the press set out to manipulate people, I also think there are some really dumb people out there that are stupid enough to try and make some money selling a story, or want create a reputation for themselves. I've read a while back about this being a problem in the Netherlands (because of a weed shortage), but couldn't find it on google for you. However, I did find something somewhat related (just so happens to be from my Hometown :) )...

Lesson is, scoundrels will steal your crop.

The drones are cheap enough as well...

Sure.

The thing that makes me doubt this story is why bother with drones?

It would be simpler, cheaper and less conspicuous just to drive around with a hand held FLIR unit.

The author is trying to use the fact that the word "drone" has negative emotional connotations.

"The drones are coming Cecil!!! Its all the fault of the marijuana growers!!! If only we give up more of our power the police will protect us!!!"

Just more bullshit from the british tabloid press. You know the same people that say weed is 20x stronger now and one puff of "skunk" will make you mental.

Keep in mind that the OP believes what he hears from rush limbaugh and glen beck!

Keep in mind that you're trolling. I'm not a follower of either of those you suggested, but I realize you're just being an asshole. Good job! By the way, I didn't write the story, only posted it. And if you think people are not using high tech to rob others, you are more clueless than I thought.

If the grow was installed and operated properly then there wouldnt be "excess heat" in the first place. Ive heard of people using handheld units but drones....come on! This is why i stopped reading papers or watching the news years ago!

So you don't believe it's possible for drones to "spy" on grow houses? I guess you haven't been following drone technology, because they are everywhere, getting cheaper & cheaper, and can be used for any type surveillance. I have a friend who has a FLIR unit, and you can drive around and spot houses with grows from the street. It's MUCH easier from the air. That's how the cops do it, or used to. It's now prohibited for them in some areas/countries. So the cops can't fly over your house and FLIR it, but criminals don't have that restriction. They can do what they want, and if you believe there aren't peeps out there looking to rip you off, then you are naive. Rippers/thieves always adapt to the newest technologies, as they've done with car theft, identity theft, and every other kind of theft. They have scanners that they put at gasoline pumps that read your credit card. Thieves are at the top of the learning curve when it comes to their business. Whether or not this story is 100% accurate, I have no way of knowing, but it certainly is possible to use the technology. Drones are ubiquitous.

considering the police don't have much luck using flir I don't know how successful this would be. it may well be scare mongering... we get a lot of shit in the news papers, and plenty on bbc documentaries as well. who knows. maybe it was placed to give some criminals ideas on how to rob people to save the police bothering to raid them..

Why u being so defensive bro? Did you even read my post before u quoted me? Where did i say it wasnt possible for drones to spy on houses? I was implying that that story from the independent sounds like a load of shit! Are u even from the uk? Do u even grow? If u are then u would know that people who grow on commercial scales most deffinately are gangsters and if that prick from birmingham whos is the same prick that was that bbc programme tried to tax one my mans grow ops theyd lick of his head wid a pumpey!!

The only people that mugs robbing are new small scale growers who hasnt got their shit dialled. Like i said if the grow is done properly which it should be if its commercial ie.a warehouse or underground containers then heat wont be a problem. How do you even know that its a grow u and your mate are looking at with the FLIR unit? Btw police always fly over houses in the uk using thermal imaging to try catch growers but it doesnt work thats why they rely on grasses(snitches) and thats how 9/10 grows are busted!

Easy guys. We're all on the same team here.

The problem is that most believe that the media has an obligation to report the truth.

THEY ABSOLUTELY DO NOT!!!

All journalists do is fill in the gaps between advertising space.

Could FLIR be put on drones? Sure.

But why bother when you can just walk or drive around with it?

Ask yourself when have you seen a drone buzzing around a residential street? I bet an oz of WiFi it's rarely if ever.

This story is like a combination of the movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the current controversy around the US drone program. There are too many points that can be dismissed by anyone with the real facts.

The media relies on the fact that most people are ignorant to the facts and are too lazy or simply don't care enough to look into them.
