Difference between DWC and Ebb and Flow

So I've been reading and reading and cant seem to find the clear line in the sand on the difference between these two systems.

I'm particularly interested in the differences based on:

1. Setup Time

2. Setup equipment

3. Maintenance time IE how often do i need to do do something with the reservoirs (not counting plant training)

4. Resistance to F**k ups

5. Which system is more self sufficient

If theres a specific thread highlighting this i'd appreciate a link cause the search function is not that good at searching multiphrase queries.

Plant it, Smoke it, Legalize it!

Roots sit in water in dwc, they don't in ebb and flow.
Try using the "thread title search" at the top of the page, as compared to post searches.
Also go check out a sticky by Pontiac in the grow room designs and equipment sub forum in the growers section.
A lot of great tutorials and build ideas compiled for you there.
Happy hunting.

1. DWC, cheaper and faster to setup. I literally can make a dwc bucket in around a minute. E&F has more parts. And requires media. like hydroton or perlite... sometimes a specialized tray or bucket.

2. You have to adjust flood height, inlet/overflow properly sized pump. DWC wins you only need a airpump in dwc.

3. The maintence is roughly the same. Fill with water/nutrient solution. I think I have more issues with E&F with the media, holding salts, etc, I have to hot water wash it before use.. I dont need media with DWC. E&F can be scaled up or down easier. I occassionaly have to clean the pump filter in E&F. DWC maintence might entail changing an airstone.. if that..

4. E&F wins, I seem to have less problems with root rot, but I dont have that many problems with it to begin with. However if the pump in e&f fails you are screwed. I've had a pump failure with DWC but it was at least a few days before I caught it. E&F is something I would like to use in a higher temp enviro like vertical. Under/overdosing is about the same. I also can run DWC isolated, so if I do have an infection problem, and they are not connected, its not too big a deal. E&F usually runs on a common tank.

5. My vote goes for either, if I was doing SOG I would go E&F. Trees RDWC. I like a large res for either systems. If you can get a float to keep the water level correct in either system you'll be fine. Youll just have to reset the nutes every week.

DWC is easy and effective, so is E&F, its a little more versatile, has a bit more maintence but works good for smaller plants. I had a flood table I was using for my clones.. worked awesome.

Just some thoughts.
