There was a thread with all kinds of wonderful ways to keep yourself safer on the internet, and I could use it and can't find it now. I juest got a flash drive, and have Tor and antivirus/firewall/antispyware, but also remember something about compartmentalizing or something like that where you basically create a virtual world where you can't be traced. How? Where did that thread go?

yeah man think that is it, THANKS! Although I thought it was a lot longer, like 3 or 4 pages, but the opening post seems exactly like I remember. It is pointed out there that "lots" of security can draw red flags. But what is the alternative? Do nothing to protect yourself? That song "Rape Me" by Nirvana comes to mind! :D

I think for my needs, a good firewall/antivirus/antispyware package or seperate entities is a start. Then No Script, Ghostery, Tor and maybe a few other things. Proxies that you buy seem too expensive and may as it's been said draw too much attention. As far as bad exit nodes, I know nothing about that. I heard it said somewhere that you can run your whole machine off of a USB Flash Thumb drive, and just got one of those for that purpose. But how do you get all the necessary stuff to do that onto the flash drive? That is what I am most interested getting help with. Thanks!

No security anymore. If they want your info, they will get it. Whomever the THEY is. You can try TOR etc etc. but personally I think that can be broken into as well. Basically anything that conducts electricity can be hacked into.

yeah but you would think some country would create secure electronic devices and people concerned with this would buy from them (Germany perhaps? ;) )
If not I have to start my own country! :D

PS. I have had problems with the PC lately, it after a few minutes says "my dell is not working", for a while my Trend Micro platinum security was was not working (well, would not update), backed up to an earlier date and that is fine now but I have to keep allowing Malwarebytes to open up. Meanwhile that malwarebytes keeps saying it blocked some malicious outbound whatever from Tor. I don't know wtf is going on but hope I can get some answers! Good luck to you as well man!

Hi SpaceT

Just a few pointers. Am not an expert but iv graduated computer science from UCT (university of cape town) and currently work as a network administrator for a exploration company here at home (not south africa)

First, you should know that DELL is basically owned by the American military and thus will alwyas have some means of getting a backdoor entry (as long as you are online, this is possible) the other aspect when using dell is that a lot of people within the ICT industry that don't like the fact that DELL and the U.S military are buddies will want to get access to this backdoor (and most of these people are using and experimenting on tor and ghostery and VPN tunnels etc) which you are going to have to end up using if you want a non tracking experience.

The other thing is you probably already have a bigger than you think foot print on the web. Every single thing you have ever put on the web has added to some analytic table (doesn't necessary point to you, but it could if someone uses it and they know what they looking for) so i stress, closing down account you dont need etc.

Advise:

you can use https://duckduckgo.com/ as a browser if you don't trust Firefox (i do) or simply use firefox and https://duckduckgo.com/ as your "google page

Further if you want to go deeper, you can use a VPN
which literary hides your actual identity by mimicking connections and an Identity whilst concealing the actual one. You will need a paid service (makes it easy and seamless and you don't gotta do shit, but i would question all these companies that make it easy, cause once they get hacked or their CEO jumps on the governments buddy list, everyone identity is reveled, not to mention that the U.S government is known for fronting companies. I know 3 of them in my own country, my cousins work for em... they think we all just want money)

READ THIS FIRST: (or only this and you'll know more)
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/09/why-you-need-a-vpn-and-how-to-choose-one/

check the below links;

next thing is, think data! Your data! Do not KEEP this stuff in the predefined microsoft folders!! Its the worst!! dont do it!

Dont use dropbox instead use druva drive (NASA uses this!!!!) my company pays A SHIT LOAD so they can have a piece of mind when sharing a pdf geographically limited from view....like seriously an ARM AND LEG for infrastructure as well...

hey you could always install something like https://www.centos.org/, a linux flavor and install duck duck and finished...

the issue is that conventional means of web surfing are often the least that allow privacy. you are tracked most of the time you on the net.

look at this: do you have a facebook? http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmir...-user-is-part-of-an-experiment-at-some-point/

Good luck

(The company i work for has investors from the emirates, pretty stinking rich people if you ask me, the son who heads the company department is 27, as am i and he has 5 wifes, london educated and has a jet, so enough said..........but yea they STRESS privacy online, have an entire team of ICT specialist that look into various ways of keeping data safe and untraceable. Ive been working here for 2 years now, and everything i just said stems from that and off-course general perspective)

oh dont forget what u do on your smartphone...a computer in 2000 cant do half the shit you can do on an android or iphone today..

safety
