Should it be this hard?

This must be the fifth time I've tried to start from seeds. Before I start, I must ask, are most plants supposed to be this finicky, or is it just hydroponics in general which is so? From the minimal amount of plants I've tried to grow in the past (lettuce, wild dagga, cat grass) they've all been a complete success, whereas this has been an expensive nightmare.

Anyways, the process this time went 1) put jiffy cube in water (tap water ph 7.0) til expands. 2) Put germinated seeds in hole, and cover over. 3) Put cubes a few inches under light (T5 flourescent) in bowl with perlite in bottom, with saran wrap covering bowl to raise humidity. 4) Once sprouted uncover saran, and direct a fan towards them. 5) Wait until soil is completely dry before watering again.

All was going according to plan until last night when I decided to increase the fans strength. When I did, the sprouts flapped in the wind (which I thought would strengthen them further). Satisfied I went to bed. When I woke up this morning 3/5 of the sproutlings which were healthy are now drooping over the sides of the cubes. The healthiest of the five sprouts now is drooping, and looks like it is thinning at the base of the stem.

So, two questions. Should I reinforce base with dirt, or tie them to toothpicks? Secondly, how would I water them? When they are completely dry and light brown, can I dunk the whole cube in water again, or put a few drops near the stem?

Regards.

So, I can spray all the sides of the cubes until they are a darker color? (I'm afraid of over-watering and causing root rot)

They need water mate or they'll die, water the jiffy til its wet through

you need to let em dry but not to the point they are keeling over

dont keep em too wet or too dry and pot em up soon as you can

fixing one problem could lead to another. humidity domes are great but damping off can be an issue when you use them.

just get them out of the wind and keep them wet enough. they need air movement but it sounds like you are overdoing it

No, it shouldn't be that hard. Your doing too much. Over reacting. They aren't just dying. You are killing them. Spend less time messing with them. No, don't tie them up. Don't poke or try to support them with toothpicks. And domes are for cuttings, not cannabis seeds. Think minimal air movement, gradually increasing it next week or so.

Once it has a few sets of leaves (and some roots) they will be much tougher. You just blasted the newborns from incubators to flapping in the breeze. How would you expect them to fair? They are surprisingly durable once they get a start.

Wait.. Seedlings aren't supposed to be fanned to increase their strength? Everyone's telling me the opposite.

Can't wait to get over the awkward phase.

I don't know about hydro but I will say this. I've had HUGE (9/10) success with just putting the seed in a cup with water then put it in the cabinet. I mean until the root is 1/4inch or more. then I just plop it in soil. I don't use the wet paper towel in a bag trick anymore. Just put the seed in a cup of room temp water and let it sit at the top. if it dosen't sprout at all in a day or too then try putting it in the bag.(but whenever it don't work just in the cup, it usually doesn't work in the bag.

Don't fan seedlings. You fan plants. I would wait till they are 8 or 10 in before you
put any fan on them. Your killing them let em be a bit.. If you have access to clones it's a little easier

there is never anything wrong with some air movement. but when you say seedlings "flapped in the wind" it sounds like you are thinking more is better

that is not the case with seedlings. they are not ready for that yet.
