I combined two of SG1's posts on how to compost incase anyone else wants some directions or a recipe.

Just have a couple questions.
1. What does 5 lbs of wigglers cost?
2. Should you avoid cardboard or ink paper? paper towels ok?
3. How often do you moisten? I assume you use tea's and water.
4. How long does it take for the worms to make the soil usable?
5. When the soil is going to be used did I see that right you sift through it to retreive the worms to add into the next batch of soil in the composter? Is it ok if some of the worms make it into the final pots?
6. Can they survive outside over the winter?
7. Do you have to turn over the soil every week or two? Mix it up?
8. What is the best depth of the soil? How high or low should the pile be? 1 ft- 3 ft?

Thanks to all that help contribute.

1. http://unclejimswormfarm.com/index.php/Live-Worms/5000-Red-Wigglers-Free-Shipping/flypage.tpl.html
2. Paper ink doesn't pose a threat, to my knowledge and all paper products are fine.
3.Oregon weather keeps plenty of water for me, summer gets a good soak once a week.
4. Depends how much soil, how much compost added, how much raw food added, how many worms.
5. Worms can survive, but barely.
Seems that they just can't stay wet enough between waterings.
6. Yes, but at depth. I winterize with a shit load of leaves.
High desert environment may need some buried plumbing heat tape for added warmth.
7. My composters/ with worms get rotated weekly.
The main worm bed is left alone. Food added on top and castings taken as needed.
8. Mine are 1-1.5 ft deep.
Worm beds in colder climates benefit from deeper beds which give you a buffer from the cold.

I use composters for vermi-composting.
Worm poopies excellerates decomposition.
I use this and EWC from my wormbed as amendments into recycled soils.

What is stopping you from re-amending your old soil. $200 and a month of cook time.

Okay SG, you have convinced me. My soil report on the old soil shows that the CEC is low. Also lacking in Ca and Boron. I have about 7 cubic yards of this soil, which was originally VermiFire, Empire Builder Growers Mix, and FFOE all mixed together now. The water shoots right through it and does not puddle at all, obviously making the CEC low. Ph a tad low too at 6.2. So what is the best source of Ca to add and how do I bring my CEC up? I have purchased "The Ideal Soil" book and am still digesting all the info in it. So any help in the right direction would be helpful. I have piled all the soil into my 12 x 12 area so it is ready to rock and roll with the amendments. Last year I used the "soup style" of fertilization with Fox Farms Nutes once a week and a compost tea once a week too. So I think with the Fox Farms and Compost Tea, I was not doing the beasties in the soil any favors. Let me know your thoughts and I will be off and running in the right direction this year hopefully. Mucho thanks my friend.

One of the best ways to bring your CEC up is to add some quality EWC or compost. Humus is a good source for improving your CEC.

Your CEC is not related to water retention.... its related to how the material adsorbs elements... If your mix has a bunch of spaghnum... your cec is fine... if its coco based... you'll want to add spahgnum. Use crab and oyster shell for Ca...

First off, never worry about PH.
Healthy soil self regulates.

Others may chime in with other suggestions, but here's what I'd add.

40 lbs of each of the following.
Crab meal
Fish bone meal
kelp meal
Rock dust (glacial or basalt)
Dried chicken poopies

20 lbs each of
Greensand
Azomite
Alfalfa meal

4 bags high quality EWC
4 bags of good compost

Mix weekly for O2 charge, keep damp once a week for a month.

Thank's SG and all minions for making this such a great thread. Figured I'd add some color with this Maui and Bruce Banner. Hope to be posting more of the SG genetics. This was when I was flushing and if you look closely you can see two root aphid I have been battling in flower that are stuck on the resin of the leaf on the one bruce banner..

Hey SG and Seaf. Thanks for all your answers to my sometimes dumb questions. One of the few threads here where the people are decent and not condescending, even when you wander off topic. Appreciate it Guys!!!!!

This is exactly the reason I support SG, and follow the threads faithfully, even if it means uprooting when necessary... a wise man learns from the mistakes of others, and the only stupid question is a question left unasked just before failure occurs...

Thanks Sea, Ive still got a couple beans left. Im just amazed at how good this plant smells...both in bloom and once jarred. Im so glad I didnt screw up the drying process this time around. She never lost the aroma at all. Im going to keep running this mom for a while. She throws out pistils and triches like crazy even under 18 hrs of light in my veg stattion. I hope this doesnt mesn that she's going to hermie on me soon. Its like she's anxious. A few other minions mention the same thing with different SG strains. Not a biggie for me. Jusg found it interesting

I'd recommend the Caliber IV Hygrometer for use in the jars OR a 62% Humidipak....
I use the Caliber at 3.5 x 1.25 x .25 inch....

@bamboogardener: I had boron and calcium issues too with
my medium for the past few months that has been fixed in
recent time, and the soil guy is mixing the batch himself so
his partner isn't supposedly jipping anyone of Ca or B lmao.
I don't think it was too extreme, I just had dainty yellowing
at some tips in a very small area and vague curling, cured.

We had a visitor in the garden the other day.. Sour Bubble
from BOG, always so amazingly stout with massive hands..
I'll try to be on more in the spare time I have, love this thread
and the vibes commonly shared back and forth here.. I'm around
