Why not keif it first?

So for all you people who make oil using either iso or bho I have a question. Why not use dry ice or another screening method to extract the THC from your material, then running the keif through the 'liquifying' process? Wouldn't this save tons of money on butane?

Am I missing something?

Wouldn't that be a matter of yield? I imagine the kief making doesn't get all the resin off.

Oil from kief sounds like heaven though ;)

You probably find alot of people making oil from buds that have already been tumbled

It makes delightful oil, just not as much of it and the monoterpene content is lower.

Yup, we found that with donations to the cancer program. The yield would suddenly be about half and on checking with a microscope, many of the stalked capitate heads were gone.

Like others have pointed out the yield is always less, to a point you will have to run the bud again to get near what you hoped for.

It is also very difficult to open blast keif or hash in a glass tube. The stuff just compacts to tightly and doesn't allow the butane to flow through the tub evenly, which leads to a big change of a blowout or tube exploding.

All the low an mid level MMJ in SoCal seems to be pre-kiefed or the trim machines are rougher than I can imagine. Greedy MFs...

well.. from my experience.. ive done a few.. and honestly.. my best oil.. was from nugs and kief from the trim from the same strain.. which allowed me to save the SMELL from the nugs.. and the yield from the kief..

the other thing.. depending on how much plant material is in the kief.. ive seen kief make darker oil.. it really depends..

but yes u save on butane.. but u get a darker oil most of the time..

and kief oil is no different then bud oil potency wise..

and ur best bet .. is mixing good kief.. with material.. so u get yield.. and smell and taste.. also.. I use an extra coffee filter wen blowing kief.. just incase.

this is why grabbing buds by the pounds.. and making it into bho.. is a waste of time.. a lot of the bud if machine trimmed.. gets tumbled for hash anyways.. I recently had a dude I know who grabs lots of pounds.. try to make some oil out of the buds.. and he got 3 grams of oil per oz.. ended up with 39 grams for a POUND of nugs..

I warned him.. kuz I looked at the bud with a scope. and u can see the heads are gone.. but stalks are there.. so it still llooks crystally.. but the inside of the bud is were the trichs are.. so u lose money on nug.. unless u know the grower.. and know hes not kiefiing or tumbling the buds before selling them.. id stay away from mass production with most commercial nugs.

I actually, normally make qwiso and was thinking of making it keif first.

On my next run I'll try it this way and try to remember to report back.
