I'd be insulted if someone tried to give me scraped pipe residue on a paper. No, I haven't ever smoked that dirty shit and I never will. I'd rather peel apart a dozen roaches for a roach joint, but even then I'd have to be pretty hard up.

The pipe residue contains THC and other cannabinoids, solid particles such as ash and pyrolitic compounds found in smoke. It is a concentrate of everything you inhale and more, because of the large solid particles that stick to the viscous tar.
The general consensus is that this material is not good for you to smoke. That's because of the foul taste and the compounds that may be carcinogenic or mutagenic created by the burn. They are collected and concentrated in the residue.
I wouldn't go that far. When you smoke a pipe you are inhaling the very same compounds. It's sort of like smoking a roach joint. I don't know if it makes a difference that both the compounds and the THC is concentrated in pipe residue. It takes less of the concentrate to get high.
One way of reducing the amount of ash and other impurities in the pipe resin is to soak it in warm water. The resin loses much of its odor and it looks like some of the ash falls out, too. For best results, press the resin into a thin sheet so that there is more surface-to-mass and more of the resin comes in contact with the water.
I'm not advocating using bong resin, but I know that sometimes there is nothing left and you're down to the proverbial stems and seeds and bong resin. Consider my suggestions a harm reduction strategy. If you have to use the resin, clean it up.

That's what a lot of people don't understand. The res is concentrated smoke.

They are the same thing. There are not separate "parts" some that "stay trapped" in the bowl and those that make it to the lungs.

The bowl is just an extension of yourself. Smoke sticks to the pipe then your mouth/throat/lungs. The body is mostly self cleaning the pipe is not.

All the "nasty shit" in the bowl is the same exact shit you inhaled in the first place.

Now smoking it again would be where problems would come in.

Constant heating and cooling of the res in the bowl is going to vaporize/destroy most actives left in the concentrated smoke aka pipe resin. So you are just smoking the shit pretty much.

Got a buddy who is an old school grower and glass blower.

He will use/make a new pipe for specific strains or seasons that he grew.

He is also very anal about anyone resin hitting his pipe, not so much as intentionally resin hitting it, but as in if you light a bowl that is to close to being gone and the resin within the pipe gets burnt at all, he can get upset.

He can be a bit extreme about it, but I have to say if you smoke some tasty herb in a pipe that was treated like that and seasoned with the same herb you can see why he does it.

A lot has changed over the years now though, simple glass pipes are pretty old school by themselves. Many have fancy super clean oil bongs or vaporizers.
