I remember these from way back, about 1969. Would buy them from a shop in the village ( Greenwich village ) Parents would be upset when found. Well, haven't had one since then but apparently the us government has waged war on bidi's and won:
US bans bidis made by Indian tobacco company

Meanwhile this guy can roll in Calcutta ( bidi's )

Maybe this is the real reason?
How To Smoke A Bidi

Way way back we were also told you could get a hallucinatory trip, similar to that of a smaller dose of lsd by cooking down 500 morning glory seeds and making a tea out of it ( blue green variety ). This is the 1960's remember. They immediately passed laws making the "ingestion" of morning glory seeds illegal.

I have enjoyed bidis in the past quite much

don't smoke them on the regular because it's not a nice habit

they are hard to find also

as big tobacco continues to lose ground to regulations and more health minded people not ever taking up the habit they'll look to their govt cronies to regulate against any competition, I was a teen back in the 60s & remember these (& clove very popular too) very well although I never smoked them or cigarettes.

makes sense that big tobacco wants to rid the states of bidis so that the clear choice for our school kids is the good ol' boy network tobacco. after all every pack of bidis bought is another pack of Camels stayin' on the shelf.......

S4L is on it.
What's the point of buying politicians if they can't draft legislation to protect your profits?

So they do.
