Refill Carbon Filter

I'm pretty sure the carbon filters use activated carbon, yes?

Does anyone know where you can buy a bag of this stuff to refill - googling just gives me a bunch of pet and fish tank items by the ounce.

What do you guys use to replenish your carbon filters?

I got 55lbs 114.31 shipped of a.c. coconut shell 4×6 mesh(pore size) back in 07. Great carbon for smell. I make my filters and passed a tap-n-rap by p.d.

Run a 40hz tone through a subwoofer (18" pro audio preferred), set your filter on top and you have an instant shaker table to settle it in nice.

Really? The carbon doesn't ever get "used up?" I guess I don't completely understand the science behind it.

There are pores in carbon that get clogged up with dust and whatever else over time. Rinsing it can extend the life of it. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say good as new, but I've definitely done the rinse method on a few scrubbers after I noticed they started losing their edge. Two or three times per scrubber, and each time they were good enough to last another flowering run. That's some significant cash savings.

If you're in an unfriendly state though you're not going to want to chance it. I'd still try rinsing for sure, but I'd do a damn thorough job of it and be sure to stay out for a night or two mid-flower to reset my nose, and return home just to be sure it was OK. AND have a new one ready to rock on hand.

makes sense. while the fragrant molecules love the activated carbon, they also love water. so given you run enough water over them you could prolly remove the fragrant mollies.

Also you can bake dry the charcoal. in a oven. keep it under 400 deg F and i imagine you would further activate it. But I am just postulating most of this.

I have the same filters for 8yrs now... im no scientist however it does recharge the carbon... try it, you have nothing to loose.. by me a beer later! lol

One more thing...when im done rinsing mine down, i put the fans back on em and they are dry within an hour

Regarding putting your fan back on it immediately, I imagine more dust and particulates will get gunked up in the carbon doing this. I've done it like that and then just opted to let it air dry, which doesn't take long with 15% humidity in your house

but if they do get gunked up, then could you not just wash them again? and would they not be degunking your grow room?

I run mine both directions and at varying speeds throught the life of the unit to more evenly fill it. There's a great article in maximum yield about carbon in a recent issue.
