Caldera based seed sexing

Good thread.

What about the belief that environment plays an important
role in sexing seedlings?

This thread for example:

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?p=6199278#post6199278.

So, are seeds sex determined by genetics or not?

I think both....

There is some evidence that at the stage of three-pairs-of-leaves and for two or three weeks afterword:

a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females
a higher potassium concentration will give more males

also

treating seed with ethylene gas will increase female plants by about 50%...

so you're correct... some environmental factors could come into play.... that's part of the fun of doing science.... there are always variables...

The graphic says 100% accurate.... it also says "be VERY choosy... only 1 in 10" etc

I say we're over 80% accuracy overall...

A friend or two will be chiming in with their experience shortly with some larger pools of sex culled seed.... waitin on all the naughty parts to show...

I know personally ... I dont pick out one of 10.... I just separate into piles of suspected males and suspected females.... so I'm not exactly scrutinizing them....

Just Dropped 10 seeds into water tonight.
In 48 hours i will check their buttholes and plant them into seedling starter trays.

Will mark which are suspected females and which are suspected males.

Hope we find this pattern holds true :)

did you mark the males and females from seed? or just choose for 3 girls and 2 boys, throw em together and have positive result?

No, I label them with a boy or girl symbol and then a check mark once they show. I still grow them all just because mutant and male seeds look the same and some mutants are worth popping. :)

i got a friend

that will try this but it'll be a few months. he picked out 15 random all mixed from about 500 and sorted them in to two piles ones he thought were male and female. out of 15 he got 9 female and 6 male guessed out and bagged so he won't forget to check back and post results. the strange thing mine all had deep craters but some were not perfectly round- some sativa, some indica, some cross all the same.

the craters were deep but odd shaped on what i suspect to be male is what i meant. i don't know how it came off but i wanted to get it right.

i must admit,
the very first time i saw this graphic, and heard about the concept, i thought "total bullshit"

today, im willing to be convinced.

Tineye had a few results.... personally, I don't really know or care the source.... I'm only interested in testing the efficacy of an unknown chart that has been dismissed at face value.... what I can say is that my ratio of females/seeds popped has risen sharpish...

And the RIU thread is laughable.... they clearly never took it seriously... I wouldn't call a thread full of immediate dismissal and ridicule with an absolute 0 for testing "scientific".....

I ran this down on it last year but dismissed it out of hand...

So... lets do the work that noone else wants to... hash this one out once and for all... and put it to bed....

Exactly , this is a test that is easy for us to do , but even if this only raises the percentage of females plant in a batch of seeds is definitely worth the effort , at least for me.

As said before , as soon as i start popping my own seeds i will be back with my observation
