My last DVD player died.... So I'm on Amazon looking for a new one....

question,.... is Blu ray worth the upgrade...

and do they make a device that plays BOTH... DVD and Blu ray ...???
is it worth the cost.... and upgrade....

or just stick to a DVD player and forget about the technology....

confused to say the least....

Yes Bluray is better...but only if you have a 1080p display.
And all bd players will play dvd.

One thing to keep in mind is that now players do not have to come with older style connections ( composite, component, svideo) and some only have hdmi out.

So if you tv does not have hdmi inputs you will want to get a player that has the proper ouputs.

If you unsure post the make and model of your tv.

Get a blu ray, it will play all your regular DVD, but won't be obsolete when blue finally kills DVD.

My mate bought HDDVD, and was certain it would be victorious over blu ray.....
I would call my mate Mr Beta-max, except Beta-max was actually superior to VHS....The best doesn't always win.

Watching a show on the history channel about 1980's technology. They mentioned the war between VHS and Betamax. The reason VHS won was the Adult section in video rental stores in the 80's. For the first time people could watch adult movies in the privacy of their own homes. This drove the VHS to the top as that was the format for porn. So it was mighty porn that squashed the Betamax.

Blue Ray will be around for a while.....until the next better thing comes along.

get one with a usb port so you can play movies that you download. That way you can hook an external hard drive or USB thumb drive to the player.

About the beta ax. Not having porn is false.I'm looking at one now

All sectors of video entertainment had both formats. But horny people bought and used the VHS format so heavily it killed off the much better pic and sound quality betamax. In audio terms the Betamax is like a CD recording while the VHS is like a cassette tape.

Betamax is what was the industry standard for playing portable broadcast quality video.

you've gotten great advice on why to buy a blu-ray player, the next best thing you can do on Amazon is pound the reviews looking for the best rated players out there. Folks give excellent reviews there, many of them very detailed.

there are few movies that are worth the 1080p resolution. for 90% 720p is enough.
1080p is really only worth it on displays bigger than 40".

i have a huge dvd collection but decided to skip blu-ray and move directly to HD-files. piracy rules! fuck hollywood. :D
