So much for quality control in coco and canna being bulletproof:biggrin:

post by 1love1earth:

not sure if you did this already, but check the runoff EC of your virgin coco. It's possibly super hot right out of the bag, I had issues with this with canna coco, runoff EC of 3.0 in virgin coco. Germ'd seeds had a 25% survival rate, a few died after popping above the ground, didn't fully open leaves, and many developed a taproot, but never poked above the coco.

this is what the run off looks like after it drys... thats Salt homies, and this is what my seedlings that survived the salt look like( after 4-5 days of being supper flushed).
The coco Brick is from a Local Agway. the ppms came out at 1100 at .5 conversion!
i also got a GH brick and it came out at 300 ppms thats allot better.

lol i can't read thought you were looking for suggestions on what to rename THIS thread. if you're looking for more sources of info about coco, the handwateres coco thread was good reading for me, and the organics+coco thread. and most of the coco forum...well some. it's mostly about using bottles, i wanna use organics with coco no bottles. but it's helpful.

And there you have it folks, DON'T BUY BULLSHIT COCO!!
I used GH bricks for years and had no issues.
Canna, Botanicare, Roots, GH <-All good stuff that folks should have no issues. All too often coco gets a bad rap because theirs a learning curve involved, and when growers switch from a successful medium to coco and fail, they naturally blame the coco:tiphat:

So, if I buy a car I have to put gas in it to go. Got it, lol.

Rinse it, wash it, boil it if you want. If its hipster pre-washed coco,
at least test it pre-flight.

It's like the guy who germinates under a 600w at 8 inches
and asks if its nute burn.

Sigh.

just FYI, IO ran the botanicare bricks for years with great success. However, in the past year, as soon as I would feed my plants, they would yellow and stop growing. I finally flushed the coco and got 200 ppm out of it, using RO water at 0 ppm (yes it was zero, i just changed both membranes). Now 200 ppm isn't much in the grand scheme of things however, it was enough to cause severe lockout and truly mess up my grow. I picked up a bag of Canna coco and a bag of Dutchmaster. The Canna flushed at zero ppm and the Dutchmaster flushed at 100, although the Dutchmaster states it was buffers added.

i have 18 rooted clones vegging in Canna right now. They have been fed and are all beautifully green and growing. The price on Canna is nice too, it's actually about 5 bucks a bag less than the Dutchmaster.

i doubt thats what caused your issues. my tap water is 200 ppm all the time higher in the winter, i did a slurry test the other day which you should do to, you soak the medium in water for 15 minutes then ph the runoff. ph going in then soak and ph after 15 minutes. this will give you an idea of what the plants are subject to all the time.

i did something like a slurry test, not really in a slurry test you just take a sample of your soil and add water. i soaked my pot in the runoff after i watered it thoroughly. the runoff i sometimes let my plants sit in was over 4000 PPM. and they sit in this on a routine basis at least an hour or 2 till they soak it up. i doubt that 200 ppm caused a severe lockout when 4000 ppm for a couple hours at a time doesn't lock out anything here.

check your pH that would lead to a lockout. not 200 ppm of food.

how do you guys rinse it off? i was thinking, just pot it up n flush the hell outta em.

exactly what i do. so i like to wait till they are pretty dry for transplant. then i flush them until the water running out the bottom isnt brown anymore since i use pink fertilizer water (KISS maxibloom ftw btw). i also use botanicare cocogrow and it has some kind of brown buffer on it. ithe nutrient water never comes out pink out the bottom though. i like to flush at least half as many gallons the pot is with pHd nutrient water. if you are feeling extra cautious you could flush until runoff is equal to your nutrient water.
