We all have Mothers. But does anyone have Fathers?

I know males in veg will produce preflowers eventually, which will create pollen. But can you just keep snipping off the preflowers, which would give you a father plant. Has anyone done this? Is it possible?

I'm pretty sure that many breeders maintain stud males. Bodhi & RD come to mind.

I don't pretend to know the technical details.

they dont always go into flower. stress will initiate it but unless its an auto you can keep males safely. i hold a bunch of them. for a long time.

the quick onset of sex is good as it tells you which plants trigger quickly. for developing fast finishing outdoor strains this is crucial.

Pump and dump for me, with natural males.... I would have to have a LOT more space to save some studs. I would rather keep around females I like and reverse them for pollen.

12/12 to sex. 18/6 and I never have to pick off nuts after the first ones (reveg) 2 Kush and 1 strait sativa. No problems.. Yet!!! now that it's posted I prob got Godzilla Ballz pollenating all of Kansas

You can also save a bunch of pollen, divide it into small single use packages and freeze it.

I have limited space and this woks well for me

Yeah I was thinking the same. Im going to make a breeding chamber, and I can just keep my males in there. Hepa filters for in and outtake?

i use hepa filters myself in my ventilation in all my rooms since i have a male chamber now. just to be safe.

ideally if you have the space and means i would have the males in a separate room all together, contained in a chamber.

Fairly easy to keep males

Fairly easy to keep males

I've only been keeping males for 5+ years.

My experience is mostly with Sativa leaning hybrids. I also keep Herijuana male, and several "semi-auto" males.

So long as you occasionally prune & root-prune (2x a year) maintain steady light & watering cycles + temps are kept in check the males pretty much behave. The only exception I've had to deal with was a very light sensitive male - which wanted to bust nuts 1x every two months, had to be severely cut back, re-cloned, and I eventually lost.

I use a tiny lighthouse branded tent - 18" deep x 30" wide x 36" tall. I run lighting on 18/6. I use a home-brew LED array inside, with 'tuneable' spectrum. I keep it very blue, unless I'm looking to get some stretch - to take cuttings. Previously I'd used a bunch of 6500K 2' T5's. Filtration is a positive-pressure intake (pulling into a small can filter) ducted to 5" fan, feeding into larger can filter. I'm able to keep moms & 'dad's in there. I've even done a micro-flowering run (using light deprivation) inside the 'parent' tent, side by side with the males - no seeds!

If I were keeping a dedicated flowering room, or tent - which I'm not at the moment, I'd have a pollen filter on the intake - just to be certain. I've made the odd unintended seed or two - in the past, when flowering AND keeping a 'parent' tent... but they were only in the parent tent.

IMO breeder males are as important as Mother plants - perhaps more, due to how infrequently they are kept.

I used to toss my males... after collecting pollen and storing it . but recently when I went to use some of my Daffie #21 pollen. I saw that only a lil pollen was still alive or active.. kuz I got like 10 seeds on the 1 plant closest to were I started pollenating..

after this major fail.. I keep 2 beer cups of my males.. and once they get big.. I just take a 4-6 clones.. replace to 2 cups with 2 new clones.. and they sit till there used.. I keep a tiny 20 $ 3 tier greenhouse inside of my veg room.. that I converted into a tiny little 1 shelv greenhouse that I hung from the ceiling.. so its out of the way of the important plants.
it allows me to keep males.. and not worry about space... and light .. lol

2 boys in current flower.. Topped the 1st and placed the top in water as soon as he started to show.. His little pollen chamber ripens a few flowers a day giving me enough to hit a low branch on all my girls.. #2 is not quite fully flowered yet.. Still a mostly intact plant.. Took clones of both and other then needing topped to stay in height bounds they are cooperating
Happy breeding BNW

Apollo 11 + Ken's Bay Dream (males).

The White Castle females are looking good but the male cutting just did not want to root.

I am trying the Colloidal Silver Fem-seed routine for the first time. If that works Wow, what a good tool to have in one's 'arsenal'.

I am preparing to move and as much as I would like to take some preferred clones with me, I am thinking that's perhaps not worth the risk.

If I can take S1 seeds instead (and hopefully they're stable), well, it's something.
