2014 is here and I thought it would be a great time for some serious focus on the best of the best and see if the tried n true strains of yesteryear are just as good,,, better or lack in comparison.

Weed genetics have been enhanced several times in the last bit of recent history.. we had regular land race genetics,,, then combinations of various plants resulting in fantastic f1 hybrids.

Now,,, I had a new to the scene but experienced seed vendor tell me most of what I had experienced was midz but saying some were the real deal respectable elites.

Now remember,,, at one time everything was elite. Skunk#1,,,widow , Romulan. Etc.

Now for shitzngigglz I will name strains I have experience with from seed.
Skunk #1 ,Afghani , maple leaf indica ,romulan,widow,nl5 , nl , blueberry, Bb x Thai , johnny blaze , orange skunk , ak47 , Casey Jones x sour bubble , deep chunk , juicy fruit , master kush , g13 , jack herer , biko , pine tar kush, Hindu kush , black dominated , haze , shiskaberry , blue rhino , ROM x mikado , haw sat x iss, gypsys kiss , ssh , Kali mist , hashberry , Arjans haze , Humboldt , white rhino , sweet blue, gravity , straw diesel , ecsd , chemdog , dead head bush skunk , Columbian , Thai , super skunk , sensi star x gravity , bubblegum , God Bud x dream weaver , roadkill and probably 5 more I forgot about

Ok ,,,,now I have a current batch with nl , sleestak skunk ,rumulan x blackDom , nl x chronic , conkushion and kerosene kush (wcsd)

So,,, in my bean stash i still have quite a few others including love potion 1 , nl x ssh , haze , haze19 x skunk , purple pain killer , rock star kush , geisha , gws x lhaze , Irish x dc , sk x durban , sk x ohaze , deep chunk along with some of the strains I mentioned above and one I made and call "soul train" (Casey/sourbub x ssh)

Thing is,,,
I tried almost everything there was n before I try everything there is ,,,

I came to a conclusion,

I would like to narrow I down to maybe about ten to a dozen "can't do without" strains .

So with this in mind I was wondering how the new strains stack up in this mix.
Having a monster tolerance,,, I want the absolute best seed to stick with.

Flavor , aroma , potency and effects are all equally important.

I want to revisit some strains again as well as get tried n true winners old n new.

Things can't live without,,, some thing that will wet the whistle and ring the bell.

Now,,, I know I said $mackdown so her goes.

Sometimes when I fell for hype I was like " it tastes great but I had better."

So help me with your knowledge. Some are located in a cannabliss sweet spot with med n recreation laws and have access to the best.

I think there's a few I need always,, but wouldike to know if I should worry about the old school stuff or concentrate on the new,


So,,, as far as a collection goes I feel every complete grower should have a rotation of buds and also have some keeper moms of some favorites.

I'm thinking there needs to be some clarity on old vs new.
So of the older strains are true breeding as well such as sk1 , Bb , nl , for example and some have unique and desirable traits worth keeping.

Sour diesel , bubba kush , og kush , conkushion, rock star kush , kerosene kush , ghost train haze , sour bubble , chemog , jack the ripper , sensi star , GDP , GS Cookies , querkle, Casey Jones , trainwreck, purple pain killer , vortex , God Bud ,


There is more but I wanted to keep this away from unobtainable clone only stuff n go for stuff ez to get in seed form ,

Does the older stuff compete ? Is the newer stuff way better ?

Given the strains listed I was told they weren't all that n gotta try the new stuff but I like variety and different properties.

So,,, in a smack down royal rumble of cannabis genetics,,, thinking about uniqueness , flavor , potency , breeding , potency and longevity and high profiles,,,

Which of these would you take to a desert island paradise of quality ganja .



If you had all these seeds and could only pick under a dozen greatest of all time.

Keep in mind I like different characteristics too,,, fruity, spicy, dank,,, and stuff for giggles , anti anxiety , pain and motivation. Something for every occasion.

What are the best of the best ? Most were winners at one point in time. Some are meh n some are WOW.

I havnt tried the new New stuff so any thoughts are welcome if there is some thing I failed to mention.
My heart in the old school but my eyes are lookin in the future.

Thats 3 so far that i think i will love forever. im just tired of buying everything that comes out because of the hype only to find its not really any more potent. sometimes its just like a new flavor of ice cream. its still ice cream.

a complete 12 pack of awesomeness. Now , with that i will say i am a diesel fan but yet to experience the og side. so i am open to adding a chem strain but yrs ago growing ak47 that was fuely as fuk. almost burned my nose. it was way more chen n fuel than the chemdog i grew. so,,, heres where i can see what you guys think....

From back in the 90s I loved the nl so will always have a place in my collection. Was some nice chocolate thai, wasn't the strongest, which means we used to smoke bats of the stuff literally. Loved the euphoric high. Lemon pinesol weed, my friend was gay for that lemon pinesol he used to grow it himself. Funny was good weed, not the strongest around but he was all about that lemon zing it contained. Remember this is around 1997 1998.

Wish the strain names were known back in the day, wasn't such a scene it is now. Where I came from weed was judged on quality, it went from garbage, a big joint or bong hits will get you high, not bad, OK, pretty tasty, wicked, amazing, strictly personal, I'll smoke you a j now but can't sell you any.

Sorry back to your question, just curious what will u do with these 10 strains. Grow them all? Then what. Perpetual clone them? Just wondering. U want 10 strains that r newish?

I think for a 10 strain garden variety will b key. Durban poison would b nice. Couple nice bodhi strains for sure. Goji og.

Im looking to bypass all hype. bypass the herds of newbies that say this n that is the strongest but the never tried anything in comparison. Im trying to narrow it down to A MANAGABLE SEEDSTOCK that wont be a collection of shit i cant even get too.

New strains are just a combination of classic stuff. SOME NEW STUFF PALES IN COMPARISON AND SOME IS BETTER. Im looking for suggestions to narrow the collection and constantly fallin for new hype.

Puff puff pass lol I'm running beans of medman gear too so hopefully I will see the effects of the og kush. I had lemon kush n wasn't impressed it it was supposedly an og cross.

Haha,,, I made a strain n I thought I lost the seeds. I had Casey Jones sour bubble that was such a remakably potent unique smelling strain. It was funkadelic. Only way I could describe it but I had so much happenin at the time I flowered the plants n didn't realize how nice they were. I had female super silver haze goin at the time and all ready smoked the female cj x SB and never took clones because I was workin on paid for strains n this was a freebie.

So I was bummed but in my northern lights males there was a male cj x SB so I dusted my ssh mother that I flowered out. I had about 150 seeds that I put away n thought I lost. I found them !
So since the Casey j x sour b had the mojo,,, I hit the ssh with its pollen.
Lil train ,,lil bubble n some Mr nice $$H

I'm callin this strain SOUL TRAIN ! Just popped some beans for a test run. Its gotta be great... I figured as much funk as that train has already with a proven superstar ssh put some extra soul that funky train,,

With the cj x SB being chunky and the ssh lanky ,,,this is technicly a f1 which should have decent hybrid vigor from it being two polar opposite strains
I'm sure it'll be a hi yield mindfuk strain

The majority of modern commercial strains owe at least some if not most of their genetics to Skunk #1. If you look at the old diesel and chem lines they both look like they have a very large amount of Skunk in them if they are in fact not just unique phenos of pure Skunk like UK Cheese is. Plus their are countless more well documented hybrids of the original Skunk out there. The Dutch crossed it with just about everything back in day.

I think at the root of most modern wide spread commercial strains you can find either Skunk #1, Afghan Kush (Northern Lights etc.) and or Haze. Never underestimate the old school legends. They became legends for a reason.

Skunk #1 was on my mind. I was wondering if I should or not because I like a denser buzz and already have superskunk which is sk1 x Afghani.

I also have a RkS that dominates the grow room to the point of agony. I think its a grandparent of skunk.

On the skunk #1 side there's lots of choices. Still thinking about it ,,,,

Same here. But with how strains come an go, even more quickly nowadays, I always jump on the strains I have to have. Right now I have been VERY tempted to jump on Nepalma (Panama red hair x Nepal indica) by USC, I just love the older strains.

Older strains have been worked more too creating more stability too. Some of these newer strains are all over the place in stature.
I hear the new names all the time n think,,,"is this really all that or is it just another flavor?"

First time in @ least 10 yrs since on a weed blog as a member of anything. Peace to all gardeners!
Now on to the discussion. Old & new. I a relative elder of the cannabis scene recreational and gardening, got mostly older hubs and a few recent ones nothing fancy, but got these 1s on ice:
TGA Danny Boy / & bx 1
TGA mix supposed conqistador, astro boy
Reef man cherry bomb1& 2
DJ Short Blue Velvet, Flo , Blue Heaven
*** Flying Dutch(yea that's right) Twister
Federation Hawaiian sativa
C 99, C99 grapefruit sativa s1 pheno
Classics (my baby!) Hawaiian indica
These are a few in cold storage (some over 10 + yrs)
nuttn fancy but I've smoked the good old stuff and not too impressed with the new hoopla . I could do some fancy work with what I got. I bet I could put that Hawaiian indica on ya and have you begging for more! I think that haw indicated was a heirloom, grows very strange with round(like coins) type leaves then the pointy sweated dk green to purple with dk green, yellow and orange buds and yellow, orange, red pistils and took forever to grow like 30-40 days to get from 9 inch to one foot. Trust me them baby's commanded a dub on 1/2 gm ! Smell and taste of overripe pineapple and bubble gum.
Just saying to say some old strains still got that swag.
