Need advice on building small LED

Hey guys!

I haven't been around the forums much recently. I've been busy with work and such.

I received a multichip LED thats a 30w unit. I picked it up with the driver for under $10(couldn't pass it up). I am planning on giving it away as a birthday gift to a buddy who has been continuously talking about wanting to give these led's a trial run for some clones and a small window herb garden.

I want to wire it up to a CPU heatsink that i had laying around, however i have two issues.

The base of the heatsink is smaller than the led chip itself so i figured i'd just run screws through the led holes and into the fins of the heatsink.....That was a complete failure as there is nothing holding the screws in place(i was baked when doing this so my thoughts were not there).

After staring at this thing for days, i have yet to come up with a solution to figure out how to mount this to the heatsink...so i am turning to the wonderful bright minded community of ICMag to give me some advice.

I've got some photos in my album Click here to see my album

The second problem that i am running into is....i have no fucking clue how to solder a wire onto a flat surface. This is something i probably should have thought about prior. I do know how to solder two wires together, but i've never had to solder to a flat surface. The chip does have two holes next to the +/- contact points, so maybe i could get a screw to crimp/hold the wire on the contact while i solder it? Anyone have any links/reference guides on methods for soldering to flat surfaces?

Anyways, i've got a week from tomorrow to get this thing online before the birthday so i have sort of been in a rush on getting this figured out.

THanks everyone for having the best MMJ community around:D I recently switched over to unemployment, so hopefully ill be able to donate some of my time to the community and be able to give some advice to others!

Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive.
For soldering leds, go to youtube.

Thanks for that! Picked up some of the thermal adhesive off newegg.

Paid an arm and a leg for it to get here by tuesday next week, but that is better than not having it ready in time.

Finally found what i was looking for on youtube. I was searching the wrong thing, but after searching for soldering wires to PCB boards, i think i now know how to do it:woohoo:

Thanks ellydee:tiphat:

soldering to the pads is easy. tin the pad if it isn't already, most are. hold the wire in place and set the tip of the solder iron on it for a second. alligator clips can be handy because the key is for the wire to remain still for that brief instant the solder cools
