I will be starting my girls off under 400w of hid and switch to 1000w hps for flowering and a week later add 400 more watts for a total of 1400w of hps light.

I was thinking I was going to do 9 plants in a 4x5ft area and was thinking about using a total of 60 gallons in my setup. does that sound about right?

60 Gallons sounds about right to me. On 4x8 trays I like to use 70 to 100 gallon rez. I've run 4x6 trays with 40 gallons so 60 sounds good for your space.

What kind of set up?? Ebb, dtw, nft ???
1 light would more than likely do you. Only problem I see with a. 1k and a 400 together is 1k will be up here n 400 down here to get the usable light from it.
But res size is more to system style and size of plants.

Last ebb run I did with 7 plants 2gal buckets 30gal res. this gave me 1-2 days b4 I had to top off

That is over 6.5 gallons per plant that is more than enough. I run a DWC and each plant has about 2.5 to 3 gallons per plant. Keep in mind that 60 gallons of water weighs about 510 pounds. A res in the 50 to 60 gallon range should work nicely.
I also agree that a single 1000 should be enough for 9 plants. But if you want to run 1400 watts it wont hurt anything.

thanks bro. bc what i was thinking was each bucket would hold about 3 gallons... thats 27 gallons in the buckets and then ill buy a 30 gallon res which will only hold about 25 gallons
