Manure/Chicken Dung for Growing?

Hit-Girl

New member
I am going to grow Bubble Gum soon and thinking about the soil.

I have read a lot of stuff, but most seem to reco chemicals and additives/buying soil, so on. I am trying to do natural and get rich soil without spending money (because I am already spending all the cash I got on seeds).

Wondering if chicken dung is good to mix with the soil? I was thinking to mix good soil I dig up myself with chicken dung and grass compost (because the chicken dung is mixed with the grass from the coup).

Does weed like this?

I also can get my hands on buffalo dung, if someone thinks that's better.

/I read weed does not like acidic soil, which is why I am asking.

Thanks in advance

Chicken dung is very "hot".. Lots of N. You can burn plants very easily. Buffalo being a ruminant will be more "gentle". More stomachs.
Our organics forum is just great reading. Can even help a nasty Chemtard like me

chicken manure is real good for outdoors or for compost you may eventually use indoors

how long has the chicken bedding compost been composting? does it smell like chicken dung still, or does it smell like dirt? is it hot to the touch? or is it too gross and poopy to touch? is the Buffalo dung composted as well?

your ideas are great! organic soil strait from the Earth, that's awesome! I'm sure you won't run in to too many issues with this plan. post pics. if you do run into issues... we will be here to help.

"Poultry manure must be aged for at least 3 or 4 months - the others will be fine after 4 or 5 weeks.

It's the urea levels in the poultry manure that you have to factor in...fantastic to activate a compost pile though"

This was from Coot a long while ago.

I remember getting chicken manure in bags that had these little white worms in it. They liked to eat roots. I really hope thet don't sell that stuff any more.

Yeah I was coming to the same conclusion after some reading - need to age it and not use too much.

Will sun drying it out be good? Or is it better to just dump the wet dung in a bag and leave it?

I will post pics in a few months when I get started. Growing Bubble Gum under south Thai sun, so people might find that interesting once it gets going.

You really want to compost manures before you use them.

If that is not an option you should use a very long soil cure with lots of life in it (compost tea, ewc, local topsoil, etc).

feed the chicken poo to the comfrey the comfrey to the worms and the worm poo to the plants

that's about what I do.

These are 2 of my chickens. They like roosting on old computer stuff.

I go into their chicken coop to mine/ extract the Chicken Manure.

Besides table scraps, they get lots of seeds and fruit. So I figure their manure might have a little extra P and K.

Anyway, I mix the chicken manure with banana peels and orange peels. Feed that to the worms.

It sounds good in theory but the worms are sort of temperature sensitive. We'll see which worms finish first, the indoor worms (in buckets) or the outdoor worms (under a tarp and 6 inches of oak leaves).

Composted poultry litter can be some good shit. Our humified compost is 30% composted poultry litter. It really does need to be completely composted before use though.

My precompost area is a big deep litter pen.

Everything gets tossed in there where the chickens shred it and shit all over.

There are some of them eating some fan leaves. They get all food scraps, (meat and dairy!) The only thing i dont feed them is highly processed or salty foods. Carbon and food scraps go in - compost and eggs come out.

I love em, definitely helped close the loop between house and garden.
