Butane Residue Test Results

I just had a long, very productive talk with the owner of Ronsonbutane.com. The Neon 5X he sends out will be new stock just like I got from him, no odorant/mercaptan. Instead of a case of Comoy's, he's sending me individual cans of Comoy's, Smoke It's Premium 5X, and Meteor 7X for testing. Smoke It's Premium 5X is supposedly sans propane, and he seems to know what he's talking about, but we'll see...He's going to be taking my residual list into consideration when reordering, so expect some really nice discounts on the best butanes.

Clipper 12X had 0.025g of residue

Clipper 12X, Spain, 170g can, reads on the bottom "QT31E"

It had a lot of ok smelling, yellow tinted, slightly greasy residue, but damn, it really seems to be pure isobutane! The temperature during boil off stayed way down beneath the usual 35F of a regular can of butane with propane and n-butane. Also, the pressure was lower, indicating lack of propane.

The results will be added as usual to the head post and the Best to Worst list on the second page.

Igby, SkyHighler, I too live in the "North" and am very interested in what is "London" as it's the most readily available ( by the case) in my locale. ( Wet Coast )

Any progress on getting SkyHighler a can or two ?

I do have to express my extreme surprise that "Ronson" is the best as no one I've ever met would even allow it near the lighters, much less touch some oil... Who knew...

Comoy's, UK, 300ml can, reads on the bottom "DOM 23.05.13 05:28"

The residue was clear with a neutral scent


Smoke It's had 0.007g of residue (stinks!!! don't use!)

Smoke It's, 300ml with no country or date of manufacture on the can

Stinking, sticky, yellow residue. Don't use this even in your lighters. ;-)


Meteor tomorrow, do you guys know of a retailer up there that will do you the favor of a one time only shipment of London to me in the US?

Meteor 7X, Korea?, 165g can, reads on the bottom "130517"

Didn't have the country of manufacture on the can, just my conjecture based on the weight of the residue and the yellow tint.

I'll continue testing, but just can't find much more to test. I just ordered a can of Blazer, but can only find full case offerings for Hitman. So far no one seems willing to ship a can of London from Canada to the US, but I'll continue to pursue any leads...

Should work, but a two stage isn't required.

No, I vacuum purge the bags twice after the boil off, twice to make sure...

"How to do the test,

Cheapest generic supermarket one gallon ziplock bag, cut the ziplock off, fold up, place on .01 or .001 scale, record tare weight, fold over the top one inch to the outside, place in a pyrex dish, place the pyrex dish in another dish, squirt a full can of ~300ml butane lighter refill into a quart Mason jar as per the video, pour the liquid butane into the plastic bag, add warm water to the larger dish, after boil off vacuum purge the bag, fold the bag, place on scale, record weight, deduct tare weight from final weight, post result to ICMAG's "Butane Residue Test Results" thread." Cloud 9X had 0.003g of residue

Cloud 9X, 300ml can with no country or date of manufacture


The little bit of residue had a slight yellow tint, but wasn't sticky, and the smell was fairly neutral, so I'm going to call this a

Blazer and Bernzomatic middle of next week...
