Thanks Alien Dawg! I will eventually be posting many vertical pics from over the years. I've designed and grown in so many different types and dimensions of verticals, the possibilities are endless... Ive designed systems that fit into lockers to systems that are 10' tall with an inside diameter of 6' lit with 3-1000watt hps to figure 8' 96 site systems that fit into 108"x108"x96" grow tents. I'm very happy to be here and have an intelligent, eager audience of vertical growers.

week #1/ Day #1 Vert #2

week #1/ Day #1 Vert #2

Here are a few pictures of vert #2 that I am just starting up. Top row is Fire OG, 2nd row is SFV, bottom row is SFV. Lit w 2-600 watt hps and 1-400 watt hps cooled by 8" high velocity fan

Awesome setup :respect: Glad ta have ya on board DBT. Now we just need some more system details to go with those pics :good:

What size pump/s are you using?
Aero, hydro, hybrid?
What are you anchoring the plants in? Rockwool?
Veg setup?
Anything else you might want to toss in there.

The 1 thing that impresses me the most is that they`re in tents with reflective material on the walls AND ceilings JUST like I`ve preached for yrs and yrs bout ALL the light that gets PAST the plants gets bounced right back at their ass FTW , and yeah DBT.....

Details for us old farts , and also......Have ALL those rigs been cooled with air exchange ONLY over the yrs ?......My kinda shit....

Respect.....DHF.....:ying:....

Ok, just what I was hoping for...questions and details...
1. System is filled completely with hydroton alone. I've tried so many mediums over the years, finally settled on the clay pellets. Easy to use, and recyclable. I originally started out w a perlite vermiculite mix but good grief...what a pain in the ass that was. Then I tried using rockwool...holy shit what a pain in the ass that was. Too damp on bottom of vert, and too dry on top...plus a wild fluctuation of PH...So I settled on Hydroton.
2.I use a 1300 gph pump from Home depot...Very efficient and cheap...aprox $90 US
3.I veg the plant in 16 oz beer cups in another room to aprox 18"(pinching and training all along of course)
4.after aprox 2-3 weeks of veg in beer cups, I plant them into vert setup, most times flowering immediately.
5.when plants begin to stretch, and they most certainly do! I use bamboo to secure plants to, and rather than try to bend and weave plants into a trellis, I use zip ties to secure main stem and branches to bamboo....when plants start to get crazy big(around week 5) Im in there every day tying and securing buds w zip ties....best thing about bamboo and zip ties is that I hardly ever break branches or buds...nice and simple as I prefer.
6. The vert system itself is made of 4" PVC and sits in either a 60" kiddie pool or a custom made rez made from pond liner and framed w 1"x12" wood.
7. I like to recirculate my system and I usually mix 40 gallons of nutes per week and flush entirely every 3rd week.
8. most systems i build have 36 sites, 12 per level with 3 levels.
9. Each plant uses aprox 3 litres of growing medium as the system takes aprox 120 litres of hydroton to fill.
10. I like to have each tier aprox 24" apart to grow big plants.
11. Although yield is entirely linked to genetics and strains, I have no prob pulling a consistant 2.5 elbows each run lit by 3-400watt hps....if I were to grow only ECSD or chem D, I could easily double those yields as I have already pulled 2 plus zones per site w ECSD and chem D already...in only 3 litres of medium!
12. As I stated in another post, I fully encircle the lights in a dense canopy of green and dont need tents or reflectors outside of canopy to reflect light back onto plants. I grow multiple verts in rooms at any given time and any light that might escape in the beginning would be absorbed by surrounding verts until it too has too dense a canopy for light to escape. I DO believe that I could increase yields by adding more light to outside canopy, buy that would defeat the whole purpose of why I gro vertical in the first place, to utilize the least amount of space with the least amount of light to get the maximum yield possible.... talk is cheap, but I have produced over 3 lbs w 3-400watt hps many times in this 54"x54"x96" setup.

Sorry if I didnt cover everything...I know I've missed alot. but please keep the questions coming...I love what I do and im a firm believer in vertical growing

Peace and much respect to you DHF and Mister D
DHF, we have a mutual friend who speaks very "highly" of you, so Im most stoked to have caught your attention.

To DHF... I didnt always use cool tubes..when I first started doing vertical, there wasnt alot of access to 6" cool tubes...I remember looking for barber shop poles to use, so I originally hung my lights over a 30" fan. The lights were custom assembled by wiring mogul sockets to octagon shaped electrical boxes with 6" eye bolts connected by chain to each other and hung from the ceiling.

Are you using hydro corn in ebb/flow for veg? How are you rooting your clones? Curious about your veg training also, what does "pinching and training" entail exactly?

Clones are taken from moms and rooted in rapid rooters for aprox 10 days to 2 weeks. I then transplant rooted clones into 16 oz beer cups using a 60/40 mix of hydroton and coco coir( I personally like to use b'cuzz by atami). I then put clones in beer cups into a 2'x4' veg tray with a 2" deep layer of hydroton under a 2'x4' T5 light fixture and veg for 2-3 weeks or until plants reach aprox 18-24". I then hand water plants in beer cups with house and garden nutes with a ppm of 400-600. I like to have a 2" layer of hydroton in the veg tray to buffer roots when they start to grow out of beer cups .As soon as rooted clones are transplanted into beer cups, I pinch the main stem to promote side/ lateral growth of branches to form many colas. I like my plants to be bushy with at least 6-10 colas/branches. I "train" each individual cola/branch by pinching every 3rd node that grows laterally off of new colas...I know this may sound confusing, but its really easy in reality...I have to admit that Im an imbecile when it comes to computer tech, but I'll get help to post a diagram or pics of my "pinching" and "training" process. After Im satisfied with size and colas of vegged plants, I transplant them into vertical and almost flower immediately. By vegging my babes in another room, I cut down on turnaround of crops...Most times I replant same day I harvest...With an average flower time of 10 weeks, I get 5 cycles per year for each vert. I have 4 verts going at once, so that averages out to 20 2.5lb harvests per year out of one flower room. I'll keep trying to answer questions as best I can so please keep em coming.

Turnaround and replanting are very easy and takes an average of 2-3 hours to completely empty, clean and replant vertical. After all plants are cut/removed from system, I vacuum out all hydroton and put into 50 gallon barrels that contain water and Hydrogen peroxide 35% solution to clean and sterilize used hydroton. I usually like to let hydroton sit in the water/peroxide solution for a few days before I drain rinse and let dry and then ready to go for the next vert. I ALWAYS have an extra 150 litres of hydroton sterile and ready to go on standby by doing it this way. Once again, I apologize if this sounds confusing. I'll do my best to further explain this process if anyone needs me to.

Not a damn thing wrong with 50+ lbs per yr to pay the bills outta 1 room , and gladta see yas keep rooted cuts and pre-veglings separate to keep the ball rollin.....

I ran my vertical racks in coco DTW in #5 smart pots , and when I harvied the chopped mainstem and rootballs smart pots and all went into Rubbermaid cattle troughs full of pond zymes to break down all decaying plant matter till the next run , and swapped the next runs right out the same day they were pulled.....

All about the rotations Bro...all about the rotations....now....I`m sure you know about staggered plantings a month+/- apart in age to step up harveys per yr once all ducks are in a row perpetually right ?.....

Way back when I was runnin ebb and flow bucket flip rooms , I had 5 locations and 10 fliprooms planted a week apart , and 10 weeks later after the last room was planted the first room finished...now...

You do the math on 5 lb harveys every week x 10 x 5.2 fiscally , but I only went to each location once a week due my real world activities building and remodeling homes , and it was just too much for me ta handle as a 1 man show.....so....

I ended up with each location and both rooms a month or so apart from the other spots and Harvey was waaay more manageable then , and that`s what I stayed with after I swapped over to my version of Heath`s racks when I went with stacked bulb setups , and then it was 4 locations with EACH room 4-5 weeks apart in age finishing the same way FTW......anyways....

Yeah..... explainin details like that without pics can be trying and confusing , but for the most part folks down here are fairly knowledgeable from me beatin shit into their heads for several yrs , so just keep strokin and postin , believe me we`ll wrap our heads around yer setup sooner than later......

Peace....DHF.....:ying:......

Good Grief! 10 flower rooms pulling 5+ elbows each? Thats freakin superstar status to me DHF! I do stagger my grows to be done 2-3 weeks apart as I am a one man show myself and it was really hard trying to trim 70-100 plants 1-2 zones each at a time. It was by pure necessity that I started staggering crops just so I could keep up the integrity of my grows...I might be in the minority, but I strive to grow top notch high quality herb..in other words, I dont cut corners or sacrifice duties/chores in the name of high yield...and my patients/customers appreciate this..... but 10 rooms 5 elbows each....... Super Star!!
