20+ yrs of living in northern MN has taught me much about dressing for the cold. I wear military surplus 'bunny boots' good for -60 temps, I've stood on the ice fishing @ -25F for 3-4 hours at a time wearing these boots. If your feet remain dry & warm then that's more than 1/2 the battle of retaining warmth. Above the feet up I just dress for the occasion, DuoFold longjohns rule for warmth and comfort imo and spending any time outside requires good gloves and head gear for sure, I like a MadBomber style surplus cap I wear over my wool navy watch cap.

Military surplus is the best cold weather gear imo & functional like a mofo as there's always extra pockets and features built in. Our military is forced to over produce these items because to find ourselves w/o them is inexcusable. Surplus clothing is available year round online through many sources. yeah I can afford nice comfy rain suits for fishing but you gotta know you'll find me dry and warm under the surplus poncho I've had for about 40+(yup, mid 60s) years now. Cheap to own but built to last, it's military grade tough.......

+1 on surplus or used military gear for cold weather gear. I still use my flame resistent long underwear that I was issued with my other flight gear in the early 80's. more than 25 years ago and my long underwear still work!. They hang off me like a mo fo but they are still warm. I had alot of other items that I had to turn back in or pay for so I did not keep the parka, too expensive for me to purchase.

However I fucking absolutely kept my flight jacket, its my pride and joy. That and my custom fitted flight helmet which they neglected to ask me to return so I kept it. It now adorns one of my bookshelves in my home office.

Many memories flying, military aircraft can be cold as fuck all. Your gear has to keep you warm or you are fucked for the mission.

There is a warm up on the way for Northern MN. Thursday high of 13F, Friday 27F, Saturday 26F, and Sunday 32F. It looks like a heat wave!

Of course I have to go back to work on Thursday...

Wow that is a heat wave! Pretty sad when we are happy about high 20's and low 30's.

Although I'm psyched to see some other northern members here! Greetings!

Police: In Cold, Escaped Inmate Turns Himself In

FRANKFORT, Ky. January 7, 2014 (AP)
Associated Press

Just how cold is it in Kentucky? Apparently cold enough for an escaped prisoner to decide to turn himself in.

Authorities said the inmate escaped from a minimum security facility in Lexington on Sunday. As temperatures dropped into the low single digits Monday, officials say the man walked into a motel and asked the clerk to call police.

Robert Vick, 42, of Hartford told the clerk he wanted to turn himself in and escape the arctic air, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

Vick was checked out by paramedics and returned to Blackburn Correctional Complex, Roberts said.

"This was definitely of his own volition," she said. "It's cold out there, too cold to run around. I can understand why the suspect would turn himself in."

Vick would have been dressed in prison-issued khaki pants, a shirt and a jacket when he escaped, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb said. Wind chill readings were 20 below zero Monday in Lexington.

The Lexington Fire Department treated Vick for hypothermia Monday evening, Roberts said. A call to the department was not immediately returned Tuesday morning.

Vick was serving a six-year sentence for burglary and criminal possession of a forged instrument at the time of the escape from Blackburn Correctional Center.

There was no answer at the Sunset Motel and Restaurant, where Roberts said Vick surrendered, on Tuesday morning.

My frame home gave a few pops last night. Eerie. Kinda scary.

-10 temps, all that. People say it's below -30 or -40 windchill, but, yeah, I guess I get that. It just doesn't seem like it. The car has been starting fine. Some 20 degree temps have left it sitting.

I think California is in a drought isn't it? Thought I heard that on the news the other night.

that's exactly why I stay where I am for now, it may not be long before everyone's going Mad Max over clean water, nearly as important to the body as blood.......

The mighty, canyon-carving Colorado River starts like this:

well on the other hand the mighty Mississippi starts out like this

in the background is Lake Itasca, Itasca State Park

quite the opposite of the Colorado River :)

aaff1839_zps687da487.jpg

by the time it splits St Paul & Minneapolis it looks like this, it gathers size strength & speed as dozens of other smaller rivers join it along the 225 miles from Lake Itasca to the twin cities.

yup, where the Mississippi river is concerned all the cheese is up here in northern Minnesota, and one day when things get tough they're gonna cut the flow. Town by town, city by city, every municipality north of & including Saint Cloud has emergency contingency plans to use that water as they see fit to keep the local residents deep in liquid gold. Riparian water rights.

That photo of the infant Mississippi reminds me of another important river, The Hudson, which my hometown is located on. The Hudson River starts its journey up in the Adirondack Mountains, in a spring that flows out of the ground. At this point the width of the Hudson is like that of the Mississippi in that photo. People who lived in my area used to like to drive up to that part of the Adirondacks and hike up to the source so they could take a piss from one side to the other. After this micturation, they could make the claim that they actually pissed over the Hudson River and not be lying. This was impressive, because the river was over a mile wide where my hometown sits.

It was like 6 below F not long ago, a balmy 3 this morning. We have been bouncing around between one or several days of above then below normal, highly variable in other words.
