Our Little Dog Spike

Our little dog Spike died today.

We knew it was coming, he was 16 years old. He's been in decline and we knew he wasn't going to make it much longer. Knowing doesn't help though. Not at all.

He's not going to be climbing onto the back of the couch to rest his front paws and head on my shoulder anymore. He's not going to prance around like a hot-shit bastard after getting groomed anymore. He's not going to bark at every fucking thing in the universe anymore.

His buddy Missy keeps looking for him and then laying on his bed. Breaks my heart to watch her mope.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I'm hurting and this helps.

Goddamn it, I hate it when this happens.

That really sucks man, this kinda thing is never easy, been there myself. It feels like forever before you can actually be content with the memories as just that. Buddy of mine was here the other day delivering some green. He was playing with/checking out the cat I got the Mrs. and said it best "I hope to someday have the balls to get another dog". Long term companions as such are so much more than the term "pet" could ever hope to describe. The only instant positive I can say is to remember to live for your dog and what he showed you. If he didn't like to see you upset, try to be strong as he'd want. If you're very inward, be a bit more outspoken as you've described him. I guess I'm just saying continue to grow in your life from his memories of love. Time certainly doesn't just cure this, but it will bring the acceptance/peace.

So so sorry to hear about Spike's passing bro, I have tears in my eyes, it's such a sad time to go through. You surely gave him a wonderful life, spoiled and catered to him daily; the love & devotion we get back from our little friends cannot be equaled or measured, so pure and innocent. Every time one of mine pass I keep a candle burning for about a month hoping it helps them find their way back home.

I hope the pain passes quickly for you & your family.......

Thanks everyone. It's really hard. He was a part of our lives for 16 years. I miss him. He used to always sit and stare at me whenever I ate in my den. The missus brought me dinner here and I couldn't eat it. I kept expecting Spike to be there looking at me hopefully.

Son of a gun was always underfoot. A real goddamn nuisance. You know, I even miss that. I never realized how ingrained it was to look out for him until I didn't have to anymore.

The pain keeps coming from different directions, but I expect it will get better with time.

He had a long life and we made sure it was a contented one. We have no regrets about how we treated him, just miss the hell out of him is all.

Sorry for the loss of your faithful companion. My wife and I have been in the same position and I can tell you from experience that the answer is to get a new puppy. It's a bit too early right now, but don't wait to long. I'm sure you can train it to be "a real goddamn nuisance", just like Spike, but different. The pain will pass and you'll have 16 years of memories to cherish.. :comfort:

Thanks again everyone.

My other dog Missy is hurting too. She was always wanting to steal his food. He had an indifferent appetite, so sometimes we'd tell her it was ok to eat his food after it was plain that he wasn't going to. Spike died with his breakfast untouched in his bowl. Missy wouldn't eat it. She ate new food I put in her bowl but couldn't bring herself to eat his.

Who says dogs don't have feelings?

That's Spike's bed and blanket.

We've been giving her extra loving. Good for her and us.

When my pets miss someone that goes on vacation or something of that sort they find comfort in stuff that have its smell.
Like we watch pictures.

We're doing better today.

My wife had a bad moment when she went to the store and when she got back, Missy was excited as hell (more than usual) and after my wife got inside and shut the door, Missy immediately went and laid down. We think she thought my wife was going to get Spike and would return with him. That caused us some water works. Missy is missing Spike most of all. She's not really a lap dog, but she's been getting a lot of lap time today.

I've been advised by a good dude to keep posting and telling things about Spike. I think I will, it does help. Thanks S4L. :tiphat:

Missy sure is a cutie! I want her! I'd loan you My Little Dog for a spare except it is too far for her to walk to your side of the country. She told me to send you and the wife some
'little doggie licks and hugs wrapped with a bow-wow.'

I'd be a basket case if something happened to MLD. When my first little dog passed, I cried for 3 mos and didn't even want to leave home to go to work.

More Pictures Please? :pet the cat: jpt

In a couple of photos above, you see Spike in a boat on our pool. Those photos were taken the first time we tried that. He loved it! When we'd get in the pool, he'd run around it barking until we brought him in on the boat.

The first photo in the pool with his little hand out and the look in Spike's eyes...sure makes toast outta me. So cute! The fur on Pom's is so soft and sweet! jpt

Thanks jpt.

I wasn't ignoring your post, just was in the middle of typing my last one and got called away for dinner (out in the dining room tonight and for the foreseeable future). Then I finished my post after dinner.

I'll try to find more Spike photos. I may have to have the missus send me some. She takes all the pictures, but she mostly sends me Missy photos.

Here's one I found:

We had the pups groomed every 6 weeks and Spike always got a "lion cut". He would always strut around like he was the shit whenever he had a fresh cut.

RIP Spike

RIP Spike

We miss our dog Domino who passed away a few years ago at the age of 14 years.

We loved that dog.

About a year later my son found a dog at the pound he wanted...

His name is Bruce :dance013:

He is a wonderful pet. He is a Korean Jindo. Very polite and protective.

We still have our memories of Domino and we have Bruce.

Peace
