tissue culture propagation text?

So I've been studying up on those ole miss papers where they got their test tube clones up to 95% viability and then made synthetic seeds from the axillary buds. Thoroughly fascinating stuff.

While I haven't read the journals in awhile, it's not a read that's beyond my comprehension. That said, I don't have the background I wish I did with respect to tissue culture in general. There's a dozen (expensive) books available on the subject. I don't know any of them from a can of paint on a shelf though.

Can anyone out there in IC Land recommend a good book that treats tissue culture propagation? And does anyone know whatever became of chimera's foray into synthetic seeds?

THANKS!

What do mean by "Synthetic Seeds"?

Tissue Culture is an advanced technique of cloning. It was originally developed for the Tobacco Industry many moons ago and have been applied to many popular flora that needs to be mass produced or can not be reproduced via typical cloning techniques. i.e. Orchids

Imagine a genetic storage bank of 100 test tubes of your favorite plant(s).

Pick your favorite one and grow them out for flower or future seeds.

It is a process and it's not easy. It takes time, patience, and practice to get them successfully into culture and vice versa.

A good book that covers the basics is "Plants from Test Tubes: An Introduction to Micropropagation" It's available used from Amazon.

Principles, techniques, and Applications
edited by C. Neal Stewart Jr.
2) Dictionary of Plant Breeding 2nd edition (For all plants) By : Rolf H.J. Schlegel
3) Principles of Plant Genetics and Breeding
(For all plants) by : George Acquaah

My insider tip, especially for those with a university account (or for the print versions a uni library close by): Current Protocols and Nature Protocols
These protocols are great: nearly idiot proof, easy to follow and most of all really work!
You'd have to search for your topic as there are many fields covered and I didn't look ;) .
With a bit of luck, some are free and sometimes they have promotion days where you can access all the older (>5 y or so) protocols .
I had the chance to get nearly all I searched for due to a glitch they had exactly when I was looking for them *g*.

I recently read about synthetic seeds. Would be nice to get clone only seed clones. There is a post some years old on here.

do any of you all know of any supply companies selling preloaded prepared petris for shoot induction/elongation and rooting in standard mediums for t.c.? great links. can you post one for the subsequent synthetic seed paper.

the recipes and hormone concentrations are species specific, so you would have to find a company that makes the petri dishes/flasks on order..
