Tons of snow blowing into The Lou tonight. Medical Marijuana? No sign of that.

Pics from past International Eelpout Festivals on Leech Lk.

Just for starters every single person, snowmobile, car, truck, RV and fish house are all on lake ice, the depths where they are range from 10 to 35 feet deep, the vehicles in the distance are perched above 80-90 foot depths.

aaff1802_zpsc1e29415.jpg

the vehicles parked in rows are there to see some of the scheduled festivities, the vehicles parked helter skelter are there to catch eelpout. you can't catch fish w/o drilling holes in the ice and these partying fishermen drill thousands of holes over the weekend to catch their fish, might sound/look dangerous but it's not.

cars on the lake never go through the ice, ever. some idiots drive over creeks connecting the bays, those fools go in having ignored signs & cones. maybe one time in the 25 years I've been up here the festival was cancelled due to thin ice.

these are eelpout, aka poor mans lobster. the only meat on this bottom feeder is in the tail, you don't filet the fish you skin it then boil the meat & dip in butter.

The Jiffy ice auger, weapon of choice for almost every hard water fisherman.

The good news today is it's warm enough to snow. 15F, positive. The bad news is it's snowing.

yup, and never quite got up to the 20F they had forecast, 15F was it, winds were howling though so it didn't even feel that warm.......

Holy fuck! The IC Mag northern contingent is probably up on the weather system that's going to hit 'em...but you might want to check out this link:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

Here is a quote from a meteorologist in the article: "All the ingredients are there for a near-record or historic cold outbreak," he said. "If you're under 40 (years old), you've not seen this stuff before."

Not to often the headline is for weather that is considered deadly.

Yep. The forecast for tomorrow and Monday is a high of around -18F during the day. The governor closed the schools for the whole state. I think the last time they did that was around 97'.

In the northern part of MN the schools rarely get cancelled, it's only when the Twin Cities gets that cold that we get any kind of cancellations up here. As a kid we would get one or two days a year off from school for snow but only one day that I remember for cold.

There are a lot of busy people around here today clearing the 6 inches of snow from last night before the cold sets in. It's no fun moving snow in below zero temps.

And it drifted snow all over the place so it felt like I was moving a foot of snow instead of the 6 inches that fell.

I can assure you that the SF players are gonna feel like dying from the cold, supposed to hit -20F sometime on Sunday w/a possible high of 5 above. The body acclimates itself to extreme temps, an advantage SF will NOT have.......

I'll be rooting for the 49'ers :)
