My first indoor grow: seeds ordered, narrowing down equipment

Hi everyone.*

As the topic says, I've ordered my first seeds and now determining the equip needs.

My grow space is a spare garage closet. 32 inches wide, by 8 feet long. However the door is in the middle. So if I use one side, I'm only at 32 x *32 inches. I was hoping to get 4 to 6, 5 gallon buckets for flowering stage, but I might have to bring that back to just 2 or 3. The room is fairly well insulated and holds temperature very well. Aka, the garage is 120 degrees in July, but the closet still stays cooler and vice versa in the winter. Seems like an optimal place. Door looks w deadbolt key too. I have to keep it on downlow, as no one else smokes in the house.

I'm only growing for personal use. I use about a joint a day w a single bat/one hitter. An oz would last me almost a half a year. I'm growing because I'm tired of the $25/gm street prices, and friends that skim a little off the top. Grrr

The last decent buy I got was a very strong strain, bought 5 grams, came home tossed it on the food scale and it was barely 3. Yes we call these people friends. :(

My other option is to go to my long time chrons college buddy, which will practically give it to me, but it's what I call dirt Mexican weed. It will give you a mild buzz, but it lasts barely a half hour and your back. Kinda a waste. That's why he tokes a joint every hour! Lol

So anyway, back to the grow. Yes I have spent hours reading here and determining what my plans are. *Indoor, soil grow, would love LEDs but will prob do a single 250w sodium. I can vent to the attic and I plan on a carbon filter. I am planning on doing some clones if things go well.

Here is my first concern. The strain, or the seed choices I made. Sure wasn't easy!! I went to a reputable source, HDepot, and ordered these:

Beanhoarders *"Afghan Haze 2 x Mango Haze", 10 seeds

Crazy horses "AK47 F2 regular", 10 seeds

Seekers GW "PM Dawn" 5 seeds I think (from the looks of it, they are out and I'll have to choose a backup) I discovered after send in the order.

While I also read some info on the forums after I placed my order, that beanhorder had some not so impressive strains, but I'm not bothered by that. Could be growers differences, maybe.

So since I'm growing only a small area, and can only handle a few plants, what is my best route to start with?*

I was thinking of trying to germinate 3 seeds from each strain and see what happens. These are not fermalized, so I might have to yank a male. :(

I have NO EARTHLY IDEA OF THESE WERE GOOD CHOICES FOR A NOOBIE!!

Everyone has tons of opinions, and I appreciate them all... Just need a little confidence booster that I'm on the right path.

I have thick skin, so don't worry about telling me I'm an idiot. I am an admin of a 1200 person private neighborhood forum, I'm a web guy, so all is good in the matrix. too bad I have to connect here via VPN, slows it down some.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts guys n gals!

Look friend. I've been where you are now 2 years ago, worry about strains and whatnot.
Here is the first real advice you are going to get. Do not worry what you will be growing. It is all relative and we all like different things.
Just use what you got. You picked a good seeds.
Also, you will hear a lot of opinions about how big roots needs bigger pots and all. I have 100 5 gallon pots and I never fill them full. They all approx 3/4 filled with soil and that's it.
If you need a bit more space, go with 3 1/2 square pots and you will be fine. No matter what you hear, if you do that, it will grow and you will have good quality weed on your hands guarantee.
The equipment is the more important key to success then the kind of seed you picked my friend, so good luck.
You came to the right place.

Cool! Appreciate that! I'm anxious to get going. Will be picking up the light and supplies oner next couple of weeks. I expect the seeds w be here about 2nd week of January, mother I'm off to the races!

For that space I would do a 400w if you can, I just got a new 400w digital ballast/hood setup with hangers, timer and mh/mps bulbs for $130 shipped. I think you can dim it down to 250w too but not sure till I get it on monday. Can't really beat that price and gives you a nice amount of light for your little closest. Combine that with a little flouro mother/clone chamber and you're golden :)

Thanks surfguitar, let me know how that Rig works. I have been looking at all sorts of crap on Craigslist ... Used isn't exciting me, as I don't really know how many hours are on the bulb.

Can you share the link where you got that deal at?

Ev. I would also split my grow into two. Just plant 3 or 4 and just watch them grow and learn. The biggest mistake I made early on is that I had 12 plants going.
I really wanted to learn but they all had different idea and I barely got them to the end.
If u start with 2, you will have enough info to learn and will have some seeds left for the next grow.
A year down the road you will see that this was the best advice :)

So your thinking 2 strains or 2 seeds? Out of the strains, I was going to shoot for 3 seeds each, counting on at least one male per strain to pop up and disappoint me. It's not like they're saying, hey! I'm a female! What you doin tonight? Lol

Funny thing today, when out for a few supplies at the regular H depot, I ran by and my bro took care of me, and the moment I opened the bag of buds, I immediately thought OMG! Someone put love, attention, more love and some nutes to bring this wonderful gold sweet aroma!,,, :) wwwwweeeeeeeeeeee back on the small train!

So to my realization today, this icmag forum, and i hope eventually growing... make you much much much more appreciated of what went into it!

I'm not taking it for grante: we err, this state I live in, will be the very very last to ever remove this silly prohibition on weed!

Anyway, thank you!

reveiws seem pretty good on amazon, plus I get some sort of guarantee. I would never buy bulbs or ballast used, way to risky in my experience.

Ev. I say if you are not planning to grow to feed the family, plant 2. Maximum 3 and learn heck of everything that you can.
Most importantly all the tricks that makes your harvest.
A. Topping technics.
B. Prunning technics.
C. Defoliation technics.
Everything else is repetitive and is by the book.
Those three will easily triple your harvest and as less plants you have to split your attention the easier and the better.

Usually when hydro business shapes to your home, they ship it in unidentifyed box. No one can tell.
With the seeds it's different. I purchased the seeds before until I started cutting clones. Once you comfortable cutting, there is no need for the seeds. You can have as many plants as you want by cutting it from your vegging plants.

I agree I know nothing about these tricks but I will search and read up about it! Thank you!

I've been looking at fan and filter combos on amazon. Of course I've already done my CFM calculation and it appears I only need 50 CFM bare minimum change the air out in five minutes and to change it out in one minute, I need 250 CFM. What do y'all think of this one?

I'm shooting for around 200 CFM.

Should I be concerned about reducing the fan draw during night time? Meaning do I really need a speed controller? I'm pretty sure I'm going with a 400 W lights.

I worried about the speed during my first grow because it was in an apartment.
Ever since then I grew in the garadge and never had any use for the controllers as such.

The only controller I use is the one that controls CO2 levels.
Nothing else and doing great. I used the money for hundreds other things you really need :)

Are you saying you don't vent? Because the space is big enough or there is enough air movement throughout the structure?

I"m not too worried about speed, just moving the air out like a good grower :)

my place Is quite large (well, relatively) its 18x20 feet grow space.
I have 6 xxl hoods and I only air vent the lights, and five fans blowing insight. That's really all the air movement I need.
I am finishing my first grow in it in 2 weeks. The best yeld in 2 years :)

hey mate, if noise is any problem for you, either yourself or people living around you, get the speed controller with it, i though i could do without by putting the fan in a soundproof box, but that wasn't good enough for my neightbours so now i gotta rebuild my fan setup

the controller is usually pretty cheap, and its allways nice to have later on
