Im wondering what would be the affect of topping a 2ft plant instead of topping at the 5th node as normal

Same as the 5th only larger. These old "rules" are quite ridiculous, it should have more to do with the strain itself and less to do with how many nodes a plant has.

There is far too many variables for these rules to carry much merit.

Just cut more off so you get a bushier plant. I would just lop off the top 1/4 of the plant. This will cause a lot of growth in the side branches.
