Long term storage of cannabis

I use jars stored in my pantry (kept cooler than room temp). Sometimes I also use my crawlspace (like a freezer in the winter and a fridge in the summer. Never had a problem with my herb losing potency about 3 years old.

Ive had no issues by properly drying and storing in sealed glass jars out of the light. I have had some up to 2 years that had gotten a bit over dry but the flavor and potency held as far as I could tell.

Right now I have a fresh batch and I notice that it was overly stinky once I got the jars filled. Turns out, some of the seals dont quite seal the jars anymore and dried out a couple jars a little too much. They are the glass jars with a rubber ring and a latch to keep the lid sealed.

Is there any replacement or refreshing I can do of the seals or should I just buy new jars?

I hand manicure fresh limbs off the plant, I hang individual branches cut into workable sections in a ventilated tent in the dark for 10 days.

I hang the limbs on multiple clothes airers - http://www.wilko.com/indoor+outdoor-airers/wilko-clothes-airer-3-fold-6m/invt/1290840

After 10 days I go in the tent with food tubs - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-LTR-FOO...ome_Cookware_Food_Storage&hash=item3380d52c88

I snip all the buds off the stems into the tubs, I don't fill more that 2/3 of a tub as you will need room to turn the buds.

1 Tops
2 Mids
3 (NFS - Not For Sale)

I generally leave the buds in the open tubs for another 4 days in the tent on the floor, turning them every 6 hours or so.
To do this I put a lid on the tub and roll the buds about a bit.

After a few days of this process of turning you can do a hygrometer test but I just seal the tubs and check them as regularly as I skin up to prevent any acrid smells.

You will notice over the next week the difference in the product being smoked.

At this point you can seal it up for ages. Label the batch and freeze for long term storage.

After a 3 month cure in the tubs the first time you open some they might have a funny acrid smell but this is highly unlikely.

Air the buds for a few hours before you smoke them regardless of how long they were sealed as this will noticeably improve the cannabis flavour.

Weed tubs need to be left sealed once removed from the freezer - (Do not shake the tub) - allow condensate to evaporate before the tubs are opened, this usually takes around 1 hour.

I do not freeze my stash as I am afraid it will defrost and ruin the buds when it freezes again.

I also do not have much room in my freezer for pot. Am thinking of getting a small freezer and putting some freezer packs in it so if power goes off the 'stuff' will maintain the temps for a day or 2.

I am smoking some indica I have had in jars for 3 years. It looks somewhat brown but smokes nice. It is not all brown just compared to fresh it looks darker. Freezing it would be better but as long as it is kept cool and out of light, I say it is good for 5 to 10 years. It will lose a little luster but not that much.

I assure you that opening a glass jar in the freezer and pulling nugs out to consume will not allow the remaining content of said jar to defrost and degrade as long as it`s replaced back in the freezer.....

Mate Dave has a point about removing larger containers from a freezer and not opening sealed nugs to be exposed until acclimated to ambient temps without fear of excess condensation.....but....

Frozen nugs once brought to 62% RH before permanently stored , are as close to perfect for consumption as the product will ever get once brought back out to smoke.....

My 2 cents from all those yrs.....

there is a company that makes containers that you pump nitrogen into and it keeps the buds fresh. the nitrogen displaces the oxygen that turns buds dark. containers come in all sizes up to huge ones.

I froze pounds in the freezer in air sealed jars for 10 years. It was just like it was when I jarred it. Best method for long term storage.

I have bee"n storing bud in the freezer for years, sometimes I cure it for like 1-2 years, sometimes i freeze it fresh and I never get dried out buds.

Of course when you take the weed out of the freezer you have to let it acclimatize for 24 hours or so.

Smell, texture and taste stays just the same as before freezing even with buds stored for 3+ years. I store them in ironing bags that I cut into smaller sizes. When they come out of the freezer, i put em in glass jars after acclimatizing

I will try vacuum sealing in the future.

Btw extra info / I freeze them when they reach a wow point. This can be without curing, during the drying process or during the curing process. It is nice to compare buds cured for 3-6-9 whatever months of the same harvest and the fresh ones
