Anyone else think the REP system is weak here?

Hello All (in Minds-I voice),

I have been around these icmag parts for a while... not as long as most, but i was here a few years after I believe the site was created, so i would like to consider myself tenured in.... I have given many of my ideas to the gods (whoops i mean mods) of this site that were eventually implemented and are cause for why this site is better then the rest...

with that being said, I would like to address a thought i had about the reputation system here and how I feel it is weak...

first and foremost, I feel like there are far too many people here who are blocked out with many more blocks then they truly should have.

for example, there is a guy who has less then 30 posts and already has 3 blocks and he hasn't posted one picture of his work. now this guy could have had those 3 blocks given to him by the gift of 2 or 3 "well blocked" icmaggers.... so now that that guy has 2-3 guys juicing him up with blocks he is going to be taken as credible?

I know the karma blocks don't equate to credibility (hence ME for example lol) but I feel like something should be done to make the system more credible...

potential idea to solve this? (for example) if a member types up and posts one hell of a knee slapping joke in the tokers den and is dished out loads of karma, then perhaps this rep should be calculated in a different category of "rep"..... this rep could be displayed underneath the users green blocks, and perhaps it could be displayed in another color such as yellow or black or blue?...

I think a system like that would allow future users of ICMAG the ability to sort out who's here dishing out positive growing related info and who is here to toke and talk it up in the den....

anyone care to add anything?

I know gypsy is locked up, but maybe he has given someone else the power to make decisions related to his gem of a website... I know skip is the top dog web man, but I also know skip is a human being and doesn't like using his time if he isn't getting paid, so hopefully whoever gypsy granted power of his website also has the abillity to pay for such necessary improvements...

Change is good as long as obama or any other politicians are involved...

If a member's rep count is mostly from the tokers den, try to avoid
his grow tips, natch.

icmag is like the dancing bear. It's not that he dances well,
it's that he dances at all.

I have the biggest penis here so I have nothing to prove.

Some peeps post here for years then leave and come back with new names. It's always assumed low posts count posters must be dumbass noobs, but some of them have been kicking around here for years :)

I don't judge someone by their rep. I judge em by their posts. I am tired of being a survivor I demand something new lol

the rep system is meant to be another form of communication... take it or leave it...
U do have the option in u'r own setting to "turn-off"...and disconnect.. from the entire REp system....

if the system is used successfully...
by members it's a bit of a personal msg board.../ communication tool
if the system is abused... it shows, in many ways and can be dealt with....

I find it odd that people put so much stock in it. It really does seem to hurt some folks feelings. Kinda funny when I think about it. Peace GS

judge by the merits of their word.
post count cannot override my intuition and personal evaluation...so often ignored.

i disabled my rep bar to preclude offering advice that someone growing in another medium would be prone to disregard, or accuse of being misinformation.

it doesn't hurt my prescence in the tokers den, but...that equates to breaking wind....

Basically yeah. First forum I was on in 2005 I started to look at where some of the high rep point people were actually getting their points and nothing to do with growing.

how can you tell where your rep points come from? can you? I get a lot from tokers den now as I am on break from serious growing but I put my time in on the grow sections too.not as much as when I am rocking it an stuck in city tho.

Make it so that it is not anonymous.
If you don't agree with or like what someone has to say, have the balls to a) say so, or b) use the proper rep system, as opposed to the cowardly anonymous not helpful button. Note that it is only not helpful that is anon. I know who gives me a helpful, but not who marks down.

Have the balls to stand behind your opinion.

For example, me and a member had a disagreement about something a couple of weeks back, and he had the balls to leave a real neg rep in the rep system...and I respect that.

I've got no issue with getting a neg rep. It's the anon thing that pisses me off.

Hiding behind a wall and shouting **** is what this anon thing is.

I thank people's posts all the time. Hit my 'Did you find this post helpful' limit a few times.

For the repping - you just click on the balance/weights icon.

OOPS ! I tried it with Harry Gypsana, and it said I had given out 2 much rep in the last 24 hours. I gather the 'post helpful' count and the rep count are somehow connected - since this was the first time I tried the rep button.

Your right RR. I've given to much in last 24 hrs and can't use the balance either. First time I've tried that. So thumbs up RoadRash.

i don't have the balance beam icon for giving Rep points on my screen..
It looks more like a little atomic bomb mushroom cloud...
That said, I know most of my green rep squares are from
my funny pictures, but that does not mean the advice I've given
on growing and other helpful hints I've given are bogus....
I'm no scientist, just a regular old hippy type guy, living way back in the country
who has learned over the years what works for me in my organic
garden..Of course, I've learned some good tips here that will
help me out next spring..
PS. and I agree with Harry, if your'e gonna give a thumbs down,
have the balls to say why...

We may limit the ability to give out rep to senior members and supporters...but I doubt that would fix anything.

I agree. I hand out rep all the time. And If I feel the need to hand out neg rep, which is pretty rare, I don't hide behind the not helpful button. If I give neg rep, I use the balance beam and there will be no question who gave it.

i like the anon neg rep button it saves time .

Anonymity has no impact on the time it takes you to click that button. If you click helpful, it shows up in the users rep messages, the not helpful button does not. The only difference is behind the scenes, it would not take you any longer to click the button were the anonymity taken away. I can remember why the anonymity was brought in, because people were negging each other tit for tat, but surely if someone abuses the system, they could have their ability to give rep suspended/denied. I suppose it would be more work in these troubled times though.

I don't think rep should be limited to senior members and supporters.

There is definitely a place for the helpful/not helpful, being right there on someones posts, in the grow forums particularly, so that newbs are protected from the hypothetical moron who tells them to feed new clones at EC 2.8 and put them 6 inches from a 1000watt lamp straight from the propagator. In the den, it is not really so important.
