getting O2 to roots question

obviously, the roots need O2, which is why folks mix in perlite, lava rock etc to help keep the soil aerated and from compacting

curious why aren't folks incorporating an air pump with a diffuser in the soil like in this "hydro soil" setup at http://modularhydro.com/ProductReviews/Hydrosoil.html

i'm not crazy about the hydro soil setup, but the air diffuser (or a spider ring like they use) buried under 3/4 to 1" of small lava rock at the bottom of the pot, would seem like it'd deliver O2 to the roots and help keep the soil from compacting - i was thinking of incorporating in one pot and only turning the O2 when watering and maybe for an 1 hour or so on days inbetween

i know i can't be the first to think of this, so there must be a catch here i'm not seeing

anyone
