This thread is a bit of a carry over from my almost finished thread of their mothers (link in signature).

Mothers are a BrandX polycross- F2 WH x WW pollinated with BubbleGum.

4 clones: 2 are smaller christmas tree shape, but with long lower side branches. The other 2 are from a monster mother that I named Melanie, after a smoking hot bartender. The irony is the real Melanie barely hits 5ft tall: her namesake would be taller had I not bent the top 12" on a right angle. I needed to do that to make sure the other 2 smaller plants got decent light, too

I usually take pics from the side, but took this from the top as they were outside the tent while I dumped week-old nutes.

As you can see, foliage is full, full, full

Root ball pic. My method does not produce large roots, which I find to be unnecessary. I also trim them to force more roots to develop near the top. Each ball is slightly large than a baseball

No, they are not growing in an opaque container. This is just to hold them while dumping old nutes, and makes it easier to take pics

LEDs

2 custom- made UFO 90s were gifted from A-51 (thanks again Jeff!). One is NW (5000K) the other WW (3500K). They are slightly angled toward the middle of the 4 clones. The combination of NW + WW equal ~ 4500K, which is a very good spectrum to optimize both bushiness and stretching.

After a couple weeks, I added 2 commercial 4 ft led tubes- one 20w @ 5000K and one 18w @ 3000K. The plants are seeing ~ 2ft from each tube in addition to the 2 UFOs. I can remove the 5000K tube if I want more stretch, but keeping both until I harvest in the taller tent upstairs

A-51 has a new, all white, 3750K panel, which I hope to have soon. I need to move these to my large tent (where the mothers are ~ 7 days from harvest). My HP Bubbler is 35 lpm 4 head + 4 large Oxystones, provides tons of DOated nutes, but in my upstairs system each plant is in an Air Pot: nutrients are fed from the top using 6" HydroHalo Rings

Grow medium is ~ 2/3 polished river rock, which is fast draining, over 1/3 lava rock, which holds some moisture between feedings. This allows me to feed ~ every half hour, which makes for explosive growth

These clones are much fuller than my last from the same genetics. I attribute that to higher quality leds. Last clones I had a total of ~ 115w, all commercial leds. This time ~ 200w, 90% supplied by the 2 UFOs

Nutes

I use Hydroponic-Research VEG+BLOOM, a one part complete dry formula, which was recently improved. These clones are the beneficiary of the improved formula. Current ppms ~ 250

Clones doing extremely well

When I took them, each had small buds, which I pinched.

Pinching resulted in 3 bifurcating

The 2 tallest are from Melanie, the monster mother, whose canopy covers ~ 90% of a 2 x 4 space

Also, she is growing in a ONE LITER Air Pot, which is inside a 4 liter, but the 4 liter only to stabilize the 6" Hydro Halo Drip Rings

lol, I use those windshield things in my grow too. Kicking myself for not buying a shit load of them while they were at the dollar store this summer.

Hmmm, I wonder...

Reading through the Cal Mg article MAY HAVE provided a clue to why I do not get cloudy or amber trics

During the last 2 weeks I begin flushing using ever lower amounts of V+B, which means lower amounts of CaMg

Earlier this week, and prior to reading the article, I actually started adding 'some' Botanicare's CaMg (easily 3 year old bottle)

Since I mix nutes into RO water (~ 20ppm) and since I can buy fresh CaMg to better control ppms, think I will replace the RO formula of V+B with their tap water formula

That may mean more micros in the jars :bigjoint:

Anybody?

Perhaps one of the most important articles you can read

Calcium and Magnesium: Beyond the Obvious
by Richard Gellert

http://www.maximumyield.com/article_...eatureVar=true

EXCERPT:

Calcium, magnesium and potassium live in a delicate balance within plants. Too much of one will inhibit the other two. Finally, calcium is a co-factor in many enzymatic reactions. Its presence is needed to turn an enzyme on or off and allow it to catalyze a reaction.

#2 Calcium and magnesium are also the most abundant minerals in tap water. The majority of the PPM, or EC reading, you obtain from a measuring device is cal-mag. The most typical form of these minerals in your untreated water is calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Unfortunately, contrary to popular belief, these forms are virtually unusable by plants, especially fast growing plants.

Made up fresh nutes beginning with 20ppm RO water

I added Botanicare CaMg to where water was 60ppms,

added V=B to ~420, which is double the prior rez ppm

I had intentionally kept ppms low as the clones were growing too fast, and Melanie has not quite finished, but will pull her in a couple days, so all ahead full feeding the clones

Pics taken this morning

24 hours After Going from 200 to 420ppm

24 hours After Going from 200 to 420ppm

I was well aware that 200ppm was light for this stage of growth, but damn the clones responded really fast due to double the ppms

Note how leafs perked up and reaching toward lights

Thought you would like to see and compare

Running out of time to let Melanie finish as clone root systems are bursting out of the tote- sucking all the nutes out in 24 hours.

I turned the tote so i could lower the led tubes closer to the much shorter phenos

The cube is something I have wanted to get made as an internal tent frame onto which stems can be tied and controlled. Bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond. Alas, not available online. I had to drive 22 miles out of my way to the only store that had it! The dowels are pretty flimsy, but the ball connectors are adaptable to stronger dowels. Retail is $19.99 but 20% off coupons are readily available

Forgot to mention I had kept day light hours low (14) to keep clones from growing too fast.

Alas, as these are sat doms (used to 18 hrs+ daylight), they started showing pistils.

Increased light an extra 1.5 hours
until I move them to the HOT5 tent in a few days.

I was hoping to have new LED panel, but not yet in production.

Replaced week old nutes (330ppm) with fresh nutes @ 420ppm.

Pistils everywhere. Hope that increasing the daylight hours stops them, but whatever.

I'll be harvesting Mother Melanie in a few more days. I planned on waiting for the moon to slide after being full, but that's not until December 19th.

Due to height restrictions, not sure I can keep the clones in the clone tent that long

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]I will be keeping the 2 smaller pheno clones in the led tent, not sure if I will keep the bubbler, but I do want to harvest under the 2 ufos as primary light. Likely will remove the tubes as 180w should be sufficient

Did not get Melanie clones moved yesterday as I had too muchre vamping to do to the wooden tent frame to better accommodate draining nutes from the DIY table

Small clones now have the ufo tent to themselves.

Well I did take a few lower branches from Melanie to clone. They are under the plastic cup/humidor

Now that they aren't competing for light with their 2 @ ~ 12" taller sisters, I expect them to blossom quickly

Plants doing reasonably fine after being moved around. The root systems of the 4 clones had all intertwined, so there was some tearing involved.

Thought I would post a pic of the cubes in place in the hot5 tent. This will allow LST type training

One can purchase dowels from Lowes/HD and cut to various sizes

Clones under the 2 ufos + 2 @ ~ 16w 3000K tubes were on the droopy side- not reaching up towards the lights.

Late last night I swapped out the 3000K closest to the plant with a 5000K. Today, leafs are beginning to reach up. I gave them a trim before taking today's pic (# 1).

Also, an update in my hot5 tent (pic 2-4): I am using the horizontal dowels up top to train the top branches

Happy 2014. I am looking forward to what's ahead, although there are likely to be some major bumps along the way. Running threads helps me focus on the positive

Clones are doing well since pruning the interior clutter; below canopy leafs and stems.

I dropped from 16 to 14 hours light 2 days ago. I 'think' my magnet/flooming combination is making the nutes more effective. We'll see

Pic 1 & 2 are the small pheno clones in the led tent. Curious to see how much their much bigger sister's bush- like canopy (Melanie) interfered with their growth

3-5 are Melanie's clones under my hot5. Thought you would like to see how I am employing the cube cage

Welcome, feel free to ask questions AFTER you research the esoteric elements, like flooming and use of magnets

I have another thread for them
