The runner got up and was looking back over his shoulder trying to see how the ball was being played as he started towards home plate.

the rule states that the fielder must be out of the way of the runner or an obstruction can be called and was, the home plate umpire on the other hand has to determine if the obstruction caused a close play @ the plate.

If the home plate ump feels the runner would have been out anyway, he can allow the catcher's tag out to stand. If he determines that the obstruction caused enough delay that the runner could have been safe he can award the run instead.

both umps were correct in their part of that call, I'm rootin' for the Red Sox btw.

I am thrilled that despite that game, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series! I am looking forward to next year... go 2014 Red Sox! And thanks to the 2013 World Champs for a great season!

It doesn't matter what anyone thinks, the rules are pretty clear if you ask me. Obstruction clearly, and it was a judgment call. Detroit fan btw

well misguided detroit and red sox fans alike you were wrong, it was not interference! :D ;)
I still don't think so anyway. But thankfully that does not matter, Red Sox world champs still almost too amazing to believe! thanks for the support though!

No one said a thing about interference. The third baseman was in the way, intentional or not. Doesn't matter.Obstruction.
