Water cooled lights question.

Hey what's up everyone? I'm gunna set up a micro grow with a 250 hps and want to water cool the light, not because im worried about keeping temps down for the plants but to protect me from flir. And i wanna run a sealed box. So for a small setup how big would my res and chiller need to be? Any other info you think would be helpful, please share.

Your wasting your money trying to water cool a 250w light. no one is using flir to find 250w grows, that's so small it wouldn't even register (my computer uses more than 250w). If you where using 5kw then you might start worrying.

Seriously... 250w isn't enough heat to worry about at all. Build your micro grow box and air-cool it. It'll be :dance013: and you'll be :woohoo:

If heat is a problem and your bent on Water cooled. DIY with a cooltube and a simple heater core. That could be cool for a small sealed box.

Just to be sure I under stand, have the heater core blowing cool air through the cool tube. How big of a res do you think ill need?

If your hell bent on water cooling your lights, USE MORE OF THEM! it is more than a little bit retarted to waste all that money to cool a light that doesnt put off much heat anyways. Waste of $

No, You would remove the heat with the radiator (heater core). You would blow the hot air thru it.

250w sodium or halide in a small unvented space will generate some heat. I would have 0 concern for flir and 100% for the plant temps.

Just experiment with rez size and flow rates. The hydro innovations website can help. Look up their iceboxes.

I'm pretty much with the others on this, unless you've gotta do it, your taking something simple and making it hard.

I tested a homemade system with a 4 gal res,
cooled with those freezer blue ice paks.

Worked okay, but I shelved it, not worth the return.

If you must, there are small chillers available, go
for it, let us know how you like it.

If you have a nice consistent air source, I would go air cooled. I currently run open hood and just cool the room. I have actually found that a properly matched AC unit will keep your room at the correct RH level with the lamps adding enough heat to keep the action going. If I air or water cooled I would have to run a hugh dehumidifier wich is not much different than using an AC!

Watercooling just added a layer of complexity and was difficult to maintain.

yeah man the flir is most def not an issue for you right now , dont make it difficult on yourself .
Tempature is a better factor for you to focus on , that light doesnt put much heat off at all so you wont need the cooling methods

Not to beat this to death, but just as an fyi...HID lamps generate roughly 70-75% of it's power consumption as heat. So, a 250w lamp is roughly equal to about a 175w space heater. Fairly easy to cool the room your cab/tent is in.
