Terpenation at Terpene Station

Does it matter if the tank, terp and recovery pump are at the same level? My terp and appion are at the same level but the tank is about a foot below them.

Good ?.. I heard on a youtube video that you want your appion below your collection pot... but, I don't know the science behind that statement and I'd love to see some knowledge get dropped

When we came up in August to pick up our MK3 and take the BHO class, we tried some winterized oil that was a little runny and on the darker side but it was one of the more potent oils we sampled that weekend.

Ahhhh yes, a good description of winterized and partially decarboxylated oil.

More concentrated from the removal of plant waxes and most of the monoterpenes, which makes it both potent and smooth, but not purdy by current standards.

It is actually what I mostly vaporize, so as to reduce coughing. I regularly sample un-winterized oils and waxes, which are purdier and more floral, but also induce more coughing from the expectorant properties of some of the monoterpenes and to expel the plant waxes coating the lungs.

How are you guys packing the tubes now? I used a ss 400 mesh on top of the gasket screen, I cut out a circle of coffee filter and then wadded up one coffee filter for each ends.
So far there is no plant material getting through but I'm not thrilled with the yield so far. Around 10 - 12 % with reasonable stuff. I'm thinking the 400 mesh is too limiting but not sure.

GW any updates on the recovery pump shootout?

Still working on a four way pump shoot out, but started the Mk V test sled out on dual Appions, and switched it to dual TR-21's earlier this week, so should have that part of the data shortly.

I'm still working on the Caresaver and Haskel comparison, and it looks to be coming together. The feedback that I get from knowledgeable sources, say the Caresaver is as fast as the Appion, and much quieter without the geared fan. I hear that the Haskel will blow the doors off of either, but requires a good sized compressor to run it.

We haven't done finely timed comparisons, but I've run everything sitting at ground level on a sheet of plywood and also with the tank lower than the Terpenator and pumps. It worked both ways.

Do the TR-21's get hot? I saw a YT vid where a guy boiled water
and cooked an egg on one...

Why does winterization necessarily lead to less purdy? With proper etoh purge the final product can still retain its pre-winterization color :D

Lol didn't you just answer your own question? :p

Sort of. He did it with several hundred pounds of back pressure.
We don't have that to deal with.

The Appion has inter-coolers built in to keep the refrigerant temps
down. And it still gets a little warm...

The Appion and the TR-21 both get hot, the Appion just has air cooled heat exchanger to cool the vapor stream back down, and a cover so that you can't see hot hot the cylinders are getting, while the TR-21 does not. We overcome that issue, by putting a MT-69 aftercooler after the TR-21.

And if color is your only criteria, you are home free! It is easier to wax up non winterized extracts, because the wax acts as points of nucleation for the grains.

A friend of mine has many pounds of bubble he can't get rid of.
Is it possible to run bubble in a closed loop extractor?
Would the solvent flow or would it be stopped up by a gooey impenetrable
mass of bubble?

I have seen bubz ran in a terp ..
It worked great, the material hadn't been pressed yet so that is something to take into consideration..

It didn't seem like he packed it to tightly at all..

We ran bubble in the class yesterday ... ive done it before. Always gonna turn out dark ... better use 190 proof, wash, clean, and winterize :tiphat:

Too bad about that. I wonder why? What does it look like
after it's cleaned up?

ah I did not know anybody preferred wax for aesthetic purposes. When judging purdiness a clear shatter is the obvious choice for me but I guess reasonable minds can differ.

FatherEarth, I'm really enjoying your excellent presentation of the Terpenator Mark III! Have you seen the silicone heat mats I've been trying out? I'm completely water bath free, and loving it! ;-) https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=5915060&postcount=4
The Dorkfood DSV still seems to be the least expensive plug and play PID temperature controller, as I no longer believe the Ranco ETC is much more than a simple thermostat with a heavy duty mechanical relay. I assembled my own DIY PID temperature controller setup with solid state relay and PT100 sensor for about $50 in parts...

I have been using a Dorkfood DSV, I don't think it is ideal for our application. The reason being that it is probably fine tuned for use in water, so the PID settings take into account variables such as evaporation. I use reptile sand and you use towels (?) so I don't know if it is ideal for use with the DSV. I am going to be playing with a PID and a PT100 once they arrive in the mail. Thanks for turning me on to both the DSV and the wonderful DIY version :)
