Are Gavita ballasts that much better?

If I could run a 1000DE or 600DE(if and when they make them) vertically in a cool tube or even vert without the tube, I would. And I prove that even with one light, gavitas would beat a standard bulb.
Id bet if it was possible to do, a vert DE could pull 5 pounds.

no I have a Nano Extreme. Its put away right now I dont need it but will work in case something fails. The Solis Is a much better quality Ballast IMO.

yep, that's next on the list when I need my next ballast was the solis with the integral timer, how slick and you can setup as many as you want in series and when the timer comes on it will ignite all the ballasts in sequence so you don't overload you hydro.

Peace

I don't think that DE is currently capable to run vertically. I'm not sure why that is, or if it is an obstacle worth the money to overcome for the manufacturers...

What I would do, as I have done in the past, is run a combination of both vertical and horizontal lighting. The design is much more well suited to larger operations but you can drop vert HID bulbs between plants and have the DE bulbs mounted horizontally above.

These systems do offer more PAR and PPF per watt, I've seen the tests done with a PAR meter with my own eyes. More energy the plants can use means the potential for bigger plants and heavier harvests, that's just science. I can do a complete Gavita fixture for under $500 and if they can increase a yield from say 300g per square meter to 350g per square meter then the unit has already paid for the cost difference versus a cheapy system due to the value of the finished product. Add in the extended lifespan of the bulb accounting for heavier second and third harvests over the quickly degrading standard HID bulbs, and twice the lifespan before replacing... I think these units are a no-brainer even for smaller operations with access to 220v/240v power. Spend a little bit more up front and get it all back, plus more, over time.

Good find OC.

...The costs are not an issue if you understand how fast you break even on these. I know growers are not always handy investors but you can easily calculate how fast 10-30% more light for the same electricity pays back for the extra investment in yield. Unless you are growing lettuce of course, then it takes a bit longer ;)

So do I. Acquisition costs are relative things too. I perceive a lot of value relative to my cost of entry. So for me the decision to go with the phillips bulb and a pro level ballast (advanced gardner if not pro...) was a no brainer.

Someone on a tight budget may perceive it differently.

I'm still right tho.. ;)

So as a person who only has 7-8' of vertical space and no a/c in the grow room, can I even consider a gavita or e pap? I have a 240v outlet ready to go and I'd love to try 2 of either brand over a 4 x 8.

I would say no. Not if your going to let the plants grow normally. you have to keep the canopy 30" from the bulb. if you cant do that these wont work for you. The only option would be to flower small plants. Thats not a good idea you wont get all of the benifits from the light.

There was a thread on another forum where a guy used a 1000 wt pro in a 1.2 x 1.2 x 2.0 no problems
I think good ventilation is the key

not possible with a DE 1000 pro without major modifications to the space.. The light has to be 30" from the canopy or it will fry the tops. . I saw this happen to mine I was lucky caught it in time. The vendor for Gavita is where I got the 30" data from. If you don't have at least 8' your going to have to turn it down to 600.
