How far to keep a MH from seedlings?

So I was wondering how far I should hang a aircooled 400w MH from some seedlings?

Start it up high (3+feet) and bring it down to them. Don't want to much stress on them.

I like to start seeds in 1/2 filled cups, so that after they sprout and stretch I can fill in the other 1/2 of cup with soil to shorten seedling up somewhat.

I keep mine at least one foot or more from my seedlings. So far so good.

hmm- 400w for seedlings seems kindda excessive. not only burning a lot of wasted energy but shortening bulb life. you may want to consider t5's or even cfl's for the first 2 weeks or so

Well I guess i'll keep it at 2 feet.

And I use a 400 MH because it was either that or a 150 HPS.

you should be fine an be able to lower it over time no problem.
