Warren Zevon...one of my all time favorites. He is unknown to many people, and he really doesn't get the respect he deserves. Classically trained musician, amazing song writer with a dark and somewhat bizarre sense of humor in his lyrics. Rock N Roll wild child with a penchant for inebriation. One of those whose voice you either love or hate...I fuckin love his voice.

He performed on David Letterman's show about 20 times over the years, and would also periodically fill in for Dave's band leader Paul Schaeffer when he went on vacations, etc. This series of videos are from his last appearance with Dave. He had recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and would die from it a little less than a year later. First video is the chat he and Dave have before he performs, I think it is absolutely worth watching. I think Warren was Dave's favorite musical artist, and although Dave hold's it together, you can tell he's hurting inside. Warren's voice isn't as strong as normal, but the softer quality adds a quality that is very fitting for the night.

These might not be of interest to you unless you are a fan of his, they aren't his best performances, but these are very special. Audio/visual quality is pretty poor, unfortunately.

Here he plays his song Mutineer:

This one is called Genius:

And, the last song is Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner:

To see what Warren was like in his younger days...his first Letterman appearance almost exactly 20 years earlier:

Game of thrones fans may just recognise the guitarist...imagine him without hair, no tongue and a fuckoff big sword.
He's also got terminal Cancer.

Great song! Amazing how many great bands out there I've never even heard of. I looked these guys up on Wikipedia, very influential it seems. That guitar player, Wilko Johnson, has the same cancer that got Frank Zappa. Also said he was diagnosed in January of this year and had about 10 months to live. Must be getting close....

Still kicking....

The UK "Pub rock" scene in the 70s produced some great bands--who nobody has ever heard of:)

Wilko's guitar technique is bloody hard to emulate. It sounds so simple when he describes how to do it, but it's one of those pat your head/rub your belly things.

Here's another of their better known songs.

I saw Albert Lee in little tiny club way back, think it was the later 70's, he was touring with a new band he called Ten Years Later. Superb show, that guy could play! They were a classic power trio, and the bass player was the most energetic guy, he literally jumped up and down for the entire show. Unreal.

Another great one who died too early.

I missed Greeny last time he played at Holmfirth I literally got on the phone 2 minutes after the last ticket went.

My family have all been made aware that "Man of the world" is mandatory at my funeral.... I might not be allowed to have disco inferno and firestarter as the curtains close and the coffin moves toward the oven, but I will damned well have my Greeny.

"man of the world" is such a brilliant but very sad song,,remember doc with mick fleetwood saying " we were so young that we didnt pay much attention to the lyrics so didnt realize the trouble peter was in",,,long live peter green,,
