Carbon filter-refill or replace?

I have a cheap carbon filter(chinese 6"x24") that seems to be a lot less effective now. It's not used for gardening, just when I smoke indoors and it's lasted about 8 months or so of that but now it's not removing the smell like it should.

My question is whether it's an option to refill, and if so what is the best type or carbon to use? I know not to use pellets but certain brands would help

And if refilling isn't practical what is the best option for the price that works with a fan around ~400 cfm

why throw away the casing? know how much energy went into making it / processing it..

damn guys.. reduce / reuse ....

buy some carbon, drill the rivets, dump out carbon, dump in new carbon, shake, add more, get screws and nuts for the rivet holes, done..

ebay seller here, used it , it works

I say replace. Scrap/recycle the casing.

Will never get it packed quite like it was at the factory. It gets vibrated thoroughly until ever nook and cranny is filled.. and then vibrated some more.

Used to attempt it until the carbon prices went up over the price of a Can-Filter discounted a bit. Blew a lot of black soot out of my nose in the process.

Not much savings considering the work. Bulk carbon has went up quite a bit in price. $65 for 25lb + shipping... that's almost as much as a new filter. Maybe for the smaller ones it'd be feasible. My scrubbers have 123lbs of carbon. That'd be in the neighborhood of $320 + shipping. I can buy one for around that price..perhaps even less.

I agree with reduce and reuse, just not necessarily when it comes to my safety and security.

PS - Can 66 has about 31lbs of carbon weight so there might be some savings there as they are $160+ as opposed to $65 + shipping re-filling. I still vote you just buy filters and save your money elsewhere.

Thinking about this for a while but seems if I were you I would first look for leaks in your system, seems pretty early for a carbon filter imo.

Peace

Yeah 8 months for a cheap carbon filter is about right. A Pfresh filter would probably last twice that long or more. For a grow room, I want the peace of mind that comes from being able to rely on no smell. For processing cigarette smoke, I may not be quite as particular. I found that there wasn't enough money to be saved by refilling if you use quality carbon. Good luck. -granger

plain and simple. carbon does not work 100 percent. 15 lbs per 30 days period. pisses me off to hear manufacturer claims on how long the carbon lasts. Bullshit. dont be a sucker. get some coconut carbon. fill that can yourself. dont be a fool and think,oh. i got a phresh filter and it lasts twice as long. b.s. i made my own custom container and poured the carbon in. worked just as well as a packed filter i bought.

I could try making my own inline carbon filter but it'd be nice just to have the cannister so I can set it and forget about it. I think I have enough insight to make a decision, thanks guys

Here is the stuff :) make sure its Virgin Coconut. Another important thing is to pack it properly. I use a hand sander to vibrate the unit. I do it for a very long time. it has to be packed well or it will be useless. Path of least resistance if not packed well. the air will just go through without doing its job. I dont do this anymore. I'm not physically able to lift heavy things. I use to though:) Now I just buy a new one.

I got over 3 years out of 2 Mountain Airs. I took them out to the patio about every 6 months, turned the centrifugal fan so it blew thru them, and ran it about 45 minutes. I ran it till the gray/beige fine fine dust stopped collecting on the grill. Checked and wiped about every 10 mins. Those Mtn. Airs never stopped working, but I bought the new Pfresh filters for peace of mind during my recent room make over. I'll continue to do this on the Phresh filters I recently bought. Good luck. -granger
