First post on IC and i desperately need some assistance.
My grow is a 9ft x 9ft x 8ft room, 2400w (4x600W hps), perpetual harvest (6 50-60g plants every 2 weeks) and runs smoothly but my problem is this: its an apartment !
My exhaust vent is about 10 feet away from the back door of the apartment where people consistently go to smoke, sound is not an issue but i want my room to be completely odourless (or just not smelling of ripe ganj ) from the outside.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot :)

You need a carbon filter on the intake of your exhaust fan. Better to go big, which gives lower velocity thru the filter & better odor removal. Everybody has their preferences, but I like the Phat brand, partially because they're lighter weight-

http://phatfilter.com/what-size-phat-filter-do-i-need/

Some people use two fans & filters- one scrubbing the air in the room, another on the exhaust. Read up, get it right the first time to save grief & money.

Want you want is a 10" fan and a filter use MountainAir it is the only brand that works especially for stong smelling strains such as cheese etc in weeks 8-10.
Then if you want to get the smell to 0 your gonna want yo research ozone generators try UVONAIR they do room ones and ducting ones this is the only way u will achieve 0 smell.
If you wanna go O.T.T you could then get odourisers research ONA they do a range which once the air is clean you can the inject the smell of fresh linen to mask it completely

I use a phat filter with a six inch inline fan... My only real problem is that during the final weaks , usually like weaks 8-10 it starts to smell outside... I use ona blocks to try to cover the smell somewhat... I'm wondering if I need another filter to clean the air first and then exhaust it outside...or a bigger filter but mine is pretty big for my room and only one light...

just get a mountainAir Nickman trust me u can try all the brands rhino cann i tried em all there is a reason Mountainair are so expensive its because they are the best. Buy one you will thank me in the future what I recommended to green machine is a completely full proof no questions asked solution

I think what I'll end up doing is putting a 850cfm fan and filter recirculating in the middle of my room and an additional 850cfm fan and filter for exhaust.
I also thought about building an airtight box just large enough to fit a 850cfm filter and use a fan and filter to bring dirty air into the box (cleaning it once) and another fan and filter to pull the air out of the box to the outside window to clean the dirty air AGAIN to ensure that ALL the smell is eliminated.
Any thoughts ?

totally unnecessary what I described to you is a tried and tested method using one fan. In winter I dont even use intakes I just use the negative pressure of the outtake to create an intake with a hole in the door or wall. Here in the UK we have have to be 100% be odour control or your gonna loose the lot, I promise if you take my advise you will thank me later on

Good advice northern. No need to scrub the air twice. It doesn't make sense to scrub twice. One a done. I have my filter to ducting to air cooled hood to more ducting to exhaust. I'm growing skunk and a stinky box of mothers and I have no smell. Everybody has a favorite brand, so do your research to see which is most effective for you

your asking for trouble. almost all setups leak at some time and your venting right where people can congregate. is there any other option? I have had just about everything made for smell control. it can be done but it only takes one time and your stealth is gone my friend.as a guy that's been growing a long time I am just trying to help you avoid a problem .don't be bitching when it goes bad as you were warned.i wouldn't even do it in a legal state as there is still rippers\robbers.

The exhaust fan needs to be sized to maintain reasonable room temperature when the lights are on, and can be run at much lower speed when the lights are off. Phat's numbers about single pass scrubbing have yielded excellent results, undetectable odor at the outlet, even with some pretty skunky stuff. I certainly haven't tried all the different filters out there, can't say what's "best", but Phat delivers when used as recommended.

It's important to have excellent duct integrity between the fan & filter, obviously. Joining them directly with sheet metal screws & aluminum tape is an excellent choice. Date the filter, change it every year or sooner, depending on circumstances. Keeping a spare is smart. Recirculated scrubbing in the room won't hurt, keeps the smell down in the dwelling when the door is opened, takes some of the load off the exhaust filter, lengthens its effective life. Used but still OK filters can be recycled from the exhaust to scrubbing duty in the room, too, saving on expense.

Don't scrimp. Odor control of exhaust air is critical for long term security, even for legal growers. Ducted reflectors can reduce the amount of air that needs to be moved. Sealed rooms w/ A/C & CO2 are advantageous in that respect, no doubt. Some growers use recirc scrubbing in the room even then as an added layer of security.

any grower that says his exhaust didn't stink even a bit at one time is lying. ozone works but the smell is recognizeable and could make peeps wonder.blowing out scented air also can raise an eyebrow to a smart crook. good luck man. there is a reason I have never had any issues ,and I have outlasted lots of peeps who went down/ripped over many years. murphys law my friend

100%. I strive for that, but as said above, even with my setup, there are times that a slight detectable odor escapes. It's warm, thicker than the surrounding air, and, though I don't think it smells like weed, anybody who has been around a grow would know the smell.
FYI, that setup was a CAN75 mounted inside a room with 2400W, that measured 8x6x7.5ft high. After the CAN75 was a plenum box, with a CAN100, drawn through by a Vortex 8"HO. I did the WC drop calculations from the filter manufacturer's website, and it worked out to moving the air at about 300CFM, from my room.
It's as solid as could be. Complete overkill. Yet, if I got a straight whiff of the exhaust, say, at a buddie's house..... I'd be asking him what he was growing..
I'd find another vent location, or just buy a good dehumidifier, and window A/C, and deal with it all in the apartment, skipping the venting completely.
Or.... Scale down your grow. Work on technique. I can grow more now, under a 400w light, than I could have with 2400w a few years ago.
Keep it safe. Nobody here wants to see a bust in the making!
Best regards

CAN has been around longer than any other carbon scrubber on the market. I have been using them for over a decade. If you dont size the fan/scrubber properly it won't work right. To say Mtair are the best is just hogwash. There are a few brands that work just fine. I have 2 can 100 in my 12x12 they scrub the room no exhaust to outside no odor. I use a can 50 in my veg tent also no odor. If you used a can and had oder it was not setup properly.

I guess even considering venting to an area 10 ft from where peeps hang is what makes ya a newbee. a more experienced person would try an avoid it at all cost. I wouldn't do it.it only takes one time to blow your cover. its a definite design flaw and I am out of this thread. good luck tho an I wish ya the best

i run a carbon fan when i'm smoking in same location, otherwise why even bother using a scrubber for your grow when your location stinks of smoke all day every day.
people get wise when some one can smoke all day.

If you run corona discharge in the duct and then uv to scrub the room with a mountain air filter to are never gonna smell anything but ozone warm air I mean how far do you wanna go the only other thing to do like I said is to then put an inline duct dispenser for ona just before it goes outside and if a thief/law is walking past who can tell the difference between artificial fresh linen and a washing machine duct well then really the games up we may as well quit before we start... just make sure you turn the ozone off when ur in the room it can get really bad on your chest especially if u have flu..........

sorry to keep posting the same thing over and over but this is expensive but seriously full proof maintain negative pressure in the room and u will not got a wiff. I have acess to unlimited amounts of equipment and this is what I use as there is no need for anything else
