Most excellent! Joe Satriani (aka Surfing with the Alien style) nails Ritchie Blackmore solo. Chickenfoot - HighwayStar (Live)
Vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen and Montrose), bassist Michael Anthony (also ex–Van Halen), guitarist Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Did they do an episode of the Simpsons, and did a psychadelic version of the theme tune?

You betcha! I'm blown away that you know about that. One of the main guys behind the Simpsons is a huge fan, I can't remember his name but I know it wasn't Matt Groenig. Anyways, that guy was instrumental in getting them/their music on the show. I think they were on it a couple of times. One I am sure of was the episode where Marge got kidnapped by a biker gang, and Homer found her in a biker bar. NRBQ was the band playing in the biker bar. At the very end of that episode, when the show's credits are rolling, they had a clip of the real live NRBQ guys performing a twisted version of the show's theme song. Damn I wish I could find a clip of that.

let me see if I can find a video....hmmm, seems I can't find any videos of The Simpsons, only a few little shitty clips on youtube. I was trying to find the clip of them in the biker bar, the episode is called, "Take My Wife, Sleaze."

Anyway here is a blurb I found that explains the NRBQ/Simpsons relationship:

NRBQ are a rock band that were playing at Poppa Wheelie's, a bar for bikers. Homer briefly disrupted their playing by smashing a glass before he was thrown out.

The group served as the unofficial "house band" for The Simpsons for the season 10-12 period in which NRBQ fan Mike Scully was head writer and executive producer.

NRBQ allowed several of their songs to be used on The Simpsons, including "Mayonnaise and Marmalade", written specifically for the show. The band also appeared in animated form as well as on camera during the end credits to perform the show's theme song during the episode Take My Wife, Sleaze.
