12/12 From Seed: A Different Way To Grow

By that, dave, I'm guessing you are commenting on the lack of attention in this thread.

I agree with that. This thread should be a sticky, so that it remains on the front page of the forum and doesn't get lost in nether regions of IC Mag.

This thread is about a way of growing that all the noobs should be aware of, and if it fits their particular growing needs, they'll be able to reference this thread for help and advice.

When it slides down down down into page 3 or farther back, many noobs won't know its here, and may not hear about this way of growing.

It motivates many people to at least TRY seeing other people able to do it. :bump:

Holy Camoly, I am only up to page 18 of this thread and I've spent 2 days getting there...

But I have REALLY enjoyed the ride! Thanks a heap to everyone who has contributed to it---and to the thread starter, Hal. :tiphat:

I just wanted to pop a link in here regarding alternative light cycles.

http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/4461.html

It is from Ask Ed Rosenthal.

It says:

What would happen if I gave my plants a 27 or 30-hour day instead of 24? I would use a seven-day timer to turn the lights on for 15 to 18 hours and then give the plants a 12-hour dark period. Would this lighting make the plant grow faster or have a larger harvest?
Doctor James,
Internet

Ed says, "I think the plants would accept a longer cycle of 27-hour days and continue to flower. The next question is, "Is it worthwhile doing this?"

The idea of long cycling is to increase the percentage of time the plants receive light to increase growth. Under normal flowering conditions plants receive 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness each day. If a day were increased from 24 to 27 hours and the plants were lit 15 hours and in darkness 12 hours, they would be lit 55% of the time, an increase of 10%.

Let's say the plants had a 70-day cycle. For plants cycled to 27-hour days, it would take an additional nine days to complete the cycle. The plants under the normal 12-12 cycle would receive a total of 840 hours of light during flowering and the plants under the 27-hour cycle would receive 1,050 hours. Would the extra nine days, almost 13% more time, induce harvests more than 13% more bountiful? I think they would. Also, the buds would grow larger, resulting in higher quality produce.

I must admit that I have not tried this experiment. If altered cycles intrigue you, try it on only a small portion of your crop. Experiment first, before incorporating the plan into your entire program.

Another way of increasing the percentage of time the plants spend under lights is to find their critical forcing period. Outdoor growers may have noticed that some of their plants begin flowering long before September 22, when the day and night length is each 12 hours. Plants that begin to flower in August or early September are obviously triggered by fewer than 12 hours of darkness. Finding a variety's critical day length takes either observation of outdoor growth or some experimentation indoors. If a plant were to flower under a regimen of 13 hours of light and 11 hours darkness, it would be lit 54% of the time and under a 14-10 hour regimen it would be photosynthesizing 58% of the time.

There is also the possibility of finding the plant's critical light period and using longer days. Under the 27-hour regimen, with a critical time factor of 10 hours, the plants would be lit 17 hours of each day, or about 65% of the time
."

The impression I get is that as long as the plant receives its minimum of 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness no matter how long the light has been on (within reason) the plant will stay in its flowering mode. So if your timer wigs out and you find the plant has been under 72 hours of light, as long as its next dark cycle is the requisite 12 hours, then your plant should not revert to the veg stage.

I find this helpful because I don't use a timer and sometimes my light might be on for 13 or 15 hours instead of just 12, but I can relax because as long as it gets its minimum 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness, then the plants will stay in flowering mode.

Bump, bumpity, bump.

This thread really should have attained sticky-hood a long long time ago. It's certainly as worthy as the "Chanting Growers Group." What the hell does chanting have to do with the actual act of growing weed? At least this thread is offering advice on a very different method of growing weed that will have benefits for people who have less space for their gardens, and it offers a way to get a faster harvest. Jeez, man, why does this very valuable thread have to keep getting buried pages and pages deep? I had to go all the way back 6 pages to find it...and that's after I did a specific search for the thread title. If I hadn't done a specific search for it...how many pages back would I have had to go to find it? 20...30....40?

C'mon Admin...this thread has very useful growing information, and many newbies have never heard about it. At least if it is in the sticky section it will always be up front to help educate new growers. Or, experienced growers who have never bothered to learn about this way.

has anyone done any sativa dom this way , .. my room isnt too tall , i think thats the only way i could pull it off

Yes...many people have done this. As a matter of fact, if you want to grow a sativa indoors and don't want to get crazy using tie downs, this method is the only way of doing it. I would do a thread search for sativa and see what you get.

Here ya go, just in case you aren't familiar with searching within threads:

https://www.icmag.com/ic/search.php?searchid=3255951

that is weird, I don't have any idea why it didn't work. Let me try again, might have been too high, if that's possible.... :)

OK...well I just posted this, and then I tried it to make sure...I think I may have forgotten to do that last night. It just worked for me.

The link you provided is not working for me. Is it in a sub-forum where you have to have x-thousands of rep points to enter...perhaps?

I've tried it three times. The message says: Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

OK...I don't know why it's not working. My only suggestion is to do the search yourself, using the term "sativa."

Its pretty easy, most folks are familiar with doing searches within forums and sub-forums, but you can also search within threads too. If you go to the top of this page, on the right hand side, you'll see a few different categories. "Thread tools" is the first, followed by "search this thread." Click on that and a window will open, and type "sativa" into the window and hit search. Give it a few seconds and you should get the same results that I got, which was 3 pages of posts that mentioned the word sativa in them.

Going to try 12/12 with a big bomb! I like the idea of variety when you only need enough for personal. consumption!

I am finishing up a Mr Nice Seeds Mango Haze grow pretty much from 12/12 to 11/13 to 10.5/13.5 Just one week of fluorescent light at 18/6 to germinate.
I've just recently harvested four of nine phenos. Some are still growing, some still ripening. This is just starting week 19 today. The plants look great! The one plant that is curing does smell like ripe mango. And all the plants do smell alike. I've done a number of haze grows and this looks like it's working out really well!

yes, my 9 plants were /are under (2) 400 watt HPS Eye Hortilux Ex and 4 lamp 4' T5HO side lights. I always top but in this grow I topped half and supercropped/bent half. Either way I kept them between 30" and 40" to maturity, depending on pheno. The more sativa dominant the pheno it would stretch below the split so most of the yield was below the top two colas and the indica dom would stretch above the split, when I topped them. These plants would grow long complex branches in the form of a Y with most of the yield above the split.
The supercropped plants did well, they formed candelabra shapes with the biggest cola on the end. My grow area height is limited to 6'- 8" floor to ceiling.

Hi everyone, im looking for a little advise from people who have run 12/12 from seed with good results to point me in the right direction, iv not had time to read the whole thread yet but i think there is a good chance my question may have already been asked and answered.

Im looking to run a pheno hunt project of say 40-50 (reg) seeds in the near future but i dont have space to run them at full size so this technique is right up my street.

What pot size would you recommend?? I dont want to pot them in too bigger pots and waste medium or too smaller pots that it affects the yield.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Ps il carry on reading the rest of the thread.

I like three gallon grow bags for this, though I transplanted up to 5 gallon pails as I had the extra room after chucking out some hermie prone plants.

depends on how much space you have and the type of plants and your experience really. plants 12/12 from seed don't necessarily stretch any less than when vegged out. even 12/12 from seed all those weeks leading up til and through the first 2-3 weeks of flower. they are still vegging. so whatever pots you use to get through veg is what i assume you would start in or transplant to.

i do 12/12 from seed a lot. the way i do it is i grow em normally till they sex then i transplant to final containers.

Has that idiot Montaco stopped posting in this thread ? Jesus, I am trying to get some information on this grow technique, and all I am doing is weeding through his hate posts....I am on page 9 now, and so far half the posts is his hate....

Obviously with 139 pages there must be something to growing from 12-12...

Any chance a Mod could delete his posts...It's really annoying weeding through them...It's just a bunch of clutter....

thanks, SC

Easy there, Spacecowboy.

Motaco is not an idiot, and he has offered excellent advise over the years.

His observations about the limits of 12/12 from seed are spot on, and who are you to be requesting a thread be edited? I enjoyed his contribution to this thread, and continue to believe that he made some good points.
