Cannabis 'kills 30,000 a year'

by JENNY HOPE, Daily Mail

Health risk: regular cannabis use could lead to mental health problems

More than 30,000 cannabis smokers could die every year, doctors warn today.

Medical experts blame the Home Secretary for creating confusion about the risks posed by the drug - leading young people wrongly to believe it is harmless.

They claim David Blunkett's decision to reclassify cannabis as a class C drug - putting it on a level with anabolic steroids and prescription painkillers - sent out the wrong message and played down the devastating health effects of its regular use.

Professor John Henry, a leading authority on the drug, said the change - due to take place this summer - had undermined doctors' efforts to highlight the risks.

He said: "Cannabis is as dangerous as cigarette smoking - in fact, it may be even worse - and downgrading its legal status has simply confused people.

"We have a clear public message about cigarette smoking. Every year, the number of smokers gets smaller and the message on packets about the dangers gets bigger.

"At present, there is no battle against cannabis and no clear public health message."

In today's issue of the British Medical Journal, Prof Henry and other doctors from Imperial College, and St Mary's Hospital, both in London, say cannabis could be a major contributor to UK deaths.

Researchers calculate that if 120,000 deaths are caused among 13million smokers, the corresponding figure among 3.2million cannabis smokers would be 30,000.

The drug can cause cancer, lung disease and abnormalities associated with serious mental illness.

Users are up to six times more likely to develop schizophrenia.

The British Lung Foundation says smoking three joints a day can cause the same damage to the airways as a pack of 20 cigarettes.

Prof Henry added: "Even if the number of deaths turned out to be only a fraction of the 30,000 we believe possible, cannabis smoking would still be described as a major health hazard.

"If we add in the likely mental health burden to that of medical illnesses and premature death, the potential effects of cannabis cannot be ignored."

Dr William Oldfield, from St Mary's Hospital and one of the authors of the article, said: "Cannabis and nicotine cigarettes have a different mode of inhalation. The puff taken by cannabis smokers is two-thirds larger, they inhale a third more and hold down the smoke four times longer.

"All these factors could contribute to illnesses of the heart and respiratory system, particularly as the chemicals in cannabis smoke are retained in the body to a much higher degree."

He said the cannabis used today - especially that bought in the Netherlands - was up to 40 times stronger than that used by Flower Power hippies in the 1960s.

The level of active ingredient in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has increased from around 0.5 per cent 20 years ago to almost five per cent today. THC affects the heart and blood vessels and many sudden deaths have been attributed to cannabis smoking.

In Britain, about eight million people admit to smoking cannabis, with at least one-third of youngsters claiming to have used it at some time. They include Prince Harry, who admitted smoking the drug while a pupil at Eton.

Dear Mr. Henry, and other dumb asses quoted in the above report. I know British people think they are very smart, but I must disagree with everyone in this stupid article. I have been consuming cannabis since I was 16. I am now 61 and still going strong. Your conclusions are pure crap and I and many others from the 60s and 70s who still enjoy ganja are living proof you and your article are pure horse shit.

The only issues with cannabis consumption these days are with the "Prohibition Cannabis" That's so commonly available.

Prohibition pressures are the reason markets are flooded with dirty, contaminated cannabis. Prohibition pressures are responsible for the high THC, ultra-low CBD content cannabis that's being blamed for "Cannabis Psychosis" incidences. (see link in my sig)

Marinol... a straight 100% synthetic THC will give anyone who takes enough an episode of "Manic Psychosis" which is the exact same effect they're bitching about and blaming cannabis for in our youth.

These Psychosis studies are all based on 100% THC and are 100% bogus.

The rise of high CBD content strains of cannabis is proving to be extremely BENEFICIAL to anyone with psyche issues and has even led to strains of cannabis that medicate WITHOUT INEBRIATION of any kind.

No high, no stone, no detrimental effects to motor skills, judgment, memory or motivation. Just superb improvements in the medicinal areas that cannabis treats.

Help STOP prohibition and help the healing of our societies and the genetics of cannabis.

Keep it Clean! :D

i like how the language is intentionally misleading. such as,"could be". to my knowledge there does not exist a research paper proving a direct link between smoked cannabis and lung cancer.

a few years back i had a liver transplant and was put through every test imaginable pre-transplant.

one of the tests is an endoscopy, where they scope your air passages and lungs, among other things.

after the endoscopy, during which i was sedated and still feelings the effects, the doc looked at my daughter and said," he doesn't smoke, does he?"

i have never smoked tobacco but have been using cannabis regularly since 1965.

he said my lungs were clean.

the statement that cannabis kills 30,000 people a year is extrapolated from the rate of deaths from tobacco. a very un-scientific and politically motivated thing to do.

just another scare tactic that will fail.

I think these freaking doctors are stupid talking about cancer this and cancer that. My grandfather never smoked a day in his life and died of lung cancer. Now They can say cannabis should be classified in the same group as steroids well what about all the steroids we eat on a daily basis that is in the meat that we eat and is the reason all these young girls nowadays have and look way more mature than they should be I mean u see these young girls with bigger titts and asses like Kim kardashian and they all look like they are older than they are. I remember back when I was in school most of the white girls didn't grow tits and asses till they were around 15 to 16 and up and not for nothing alot of white girls didnt have these big old donkey butts like the girls have today I mean there were some exceptions but not like our younger generations.

More scare tatics for the uneducated masses is all that article is. When will it end? Where are the peer reviewed papers and links to back up those stats?

Lol where?..........

And I thought American anti-cannabis propaganda was deceitful. That article is shameful, even for a movie star gossip & glitter rag.

The most dangerous and unhealthy part of smoking cannabis is the FEDs & LEO.

And whatever the authorities are called overseas.

These are the sources that American conservative talk radio hosts use when they go off on a "killer cannabis" fling. Our own universities have told us otherwise quite clearly, i.e UCLA, UCSD 10 yr studies. Nothing new to you all here but when the talk guy in Boston starts hating on MMJ he sounds like my grandfather who firmly believed everything his party laid out. He really believed pot made white girls crazy for mixed race progeny! He was still a great, positive influence in my life but very bigoted. I learned rather quickly he was wrong but that's generations ago, most of them are dead.

"At present, there is no battle against cannabis and no clear public health message."
Apparently he has never even heard of the war on drugs.
Doesn't know about all the people in cages for using the plant that he obviously knows nothing about.
Amazing how people can be so opinionated over things about which they know nothing.
Reminds me of my siblings....
