ROTTING CLONES - solving this madness!

Hey guys i made this to document my latest issue with rotting clones, both to try and solve this and also hear your thoughts and experiance.

Basically i used to have very good success with rockwool cubes, would always get most to root, 80-90 the ones that never rooted as fast as the rest would just get thrown out because i only take the super healthy ones. i did everything basic, soaked the cubes in low ph solution, used healthy moms, did the 90 degrees angle snip, dip in rooting solution, put in clone, put cloning tray on heating mat with a tray, air out tray every few days, etc etc etc etc

Recently i switched from Replicator to Clonex. I used clonex in the past with success and got a free bottle from the shop. All of a sudden 50% of my clones suddenly went to shit, they would start rotting and never root. I thought it was because i was re-using trays that were a little dirty, so got all new trays. The 2nd round I LOST EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CLONE! holy shit! a bunch of seedling backups lost, all from the same symptons, they would literally rot away.

here are some pics.

These pics are from the THIRD ROUND, also happening, its hit 20% of the clones but im worried it will spread. Again, same symptoms, i start seeing necrosis on the leaves, its a dark brown wilting of the leaves, it will affect every node. When i pull the clone out of the rooter, the place where i made the snip is brown and rotting away, with zero signs of roots.

SOOO...i came to a few hypothesis and will test them out.

1. Bad batch of clonex? the stems always look rotted to hell, maybe the clonex is too thick and creates a zone for bacteria to grow, the stem literally rots away like its decomposing. maybe its time to get a new cloning agent maybe powder or rootburst.

2. Stop foliaring/misting? i always misted my plants with success with cloning. usually i will foliar the mothers 1-2 days before taking cuts. then i will sometimes lightly mist them again before going into the trays. i figure maybe this makes the humidity too high and invites the rot. so i stopped foliar spraying on the next round to see if lower humidity will help.

3. Something dirty is in my growroom, some kind of mold or pathogen. I cleaned everything as much as i could but its lingering in there somewhere and manages to attack all the clones. the cloning area is inside the veg area and none of the veg plants exhibit these signs soo??

4. its starting at the base of the clone where the cut is taking, i stopped using the scrape method because it doesnt seem to help at all. now i am doing a simple 45-90 degree snip and dipping it right away.

any thoughts or ideas what the hell this is?

strange it is happening now after you have had success previously...

yes clonex can go off...

but to me they look dried out...what temp you running on your heating mat?

good luck

Cloning always has to be clean and sterile if possible well as sterile as you can get. Also don't mist the clones just spray the first time and let dry and then cover with dome cover wipe the tops of dome if it sweats so this doesn't drip you don't ever want your clones wet . they are better off with dome cover

Air bubble in the xylem? Excess water spraying? Over "nute/fert" mama?

One method that might help is to do a 48 hour "water soak" before dipping the cutting in a rooting solution and inserting it in the rooting medium. Make your 45 degree cut, remove bottom leaves, place stem in tap water (you want the chlorine) so at least the bottom 1-2" are wet. After 48 hours, continue your clone routine. The 48 hour pre-soak hydrates the xylem and leaf parts with water and hastens the rooting action.

2nd secret....foliar spray with Rhizotonic 1-2x per day (IMHO, waste of $$$ to use Rhizotonic in soil, best results is when used as a foliar spray only).

Of course all your tools, area and trays are "sterile"--no residues of the past.

That is what I do and I get transplantable clones in 6-14 days, with 100% success. (Promix BX is my rooting medium).

Cheers!

yea i seen that one before.you could put a meter in there to check humidity, also the advice from members here.im working on trying to solve this.i put clones in one part of house thats less warm, but has more lights, then upstairs area which is warmer and less lights.the down stairs area never had the rot ,which is cooler, but with a few more lights...thats what im looking at now...as a clue? peace moon/radioactive,revolutionary..welcome to the new world.

one moe thing i had better results using compact florescents, then using 1-2 40 watt long tube fixtures...not saying this is the answer for everone...but seems to b for me...have a good one peace mooons/

i found out what my problem was, it was excess humidity combined with hot temperatures. this caused the damping off. i also started to dip my clones in fungicide as well like physan 20 and it has helped.

either way my rock wool cloning has been consistenly pretty bad, so i switched the cloners and am having better success just gotta keep them clean.

ya timmy you are right, damping off from too wet medium that led to the clones getting that "bubble". once they get that bubble you have to recut the clone and start again if you can.
What was your temps and humidity? They can also get a slime with that bubble. Just make sure you do not dip the clones into the main container, because you will contaminate the entire stuff. I used a gel and peat pucks when I cloned, I also used superthrive. I would get a bowl of water and soak the pucks in water with a drop of superthrive. Then I would take my cuttings and slice all the way around and dip it in cloning gel, put them into the peat pucks and a dome, if you have too big or too small of a dome you will either get too much humdity or not enough. certain cloning brands work better with certain mediums. Like when I used rockwool I had a bad success rate with cloning gel, with the liquid kind I had much better in rockwool. Not sure why that is,,,,

Get rid of the cloning "gel". Try "dip n grow" w rock wool or the rapid rooter. I use the dip n grow concentrate. I was having the same issue, I spray the clones and there on a heat mat. I switched cloning solutions and was back to 95%. You mentioned a free give away sample at the grow store, maybe it was at the end if it shelf life. If you had no probs before, and all you did was change the cloning solution, change it again and c if that is your issue.

I take the cuttings, put them in a pan with water and 4 Tbl 3% Peroxide/gal. My tools are in the same pan. I trim the cuts and make the final 45˚ cut, then give at least a 15 second dip in Dip 'n Grow, then into medium. Good luck. -granger

Glad you're getting better success.

You hit the nail on the head. Too warm and too humid can lead to failure quick. If things are rotting/ mushing out then conditions are being kept too wet.
Many are taught warm and humid for cloning success... which is correct, but I've found many tend to over do it.

Here is exactly what I do to pretty much get 100% consistently. I haven't lost a clone in forever and break a lot of the "rules".

  • Root Riots or similar type of composted tree bark plug.
  • Clonex single-use packets
  • 7" Dome with vents
  • Small wattage fluorescent. I use two t5 strip lights.
  • I use well used micro-tip pruners to cut the clones and don't bother with sterilization really whatsoever.

I saturate the tray of plugs with straight RO water and let them soak it all up to their max retention and then dump out any excess. I then fill up a kool aid pitcher with RO water and load it up with bunch of clones to take back to the work bench.

I then cut, dip, and stab into the root riot until it feels snug. I also half any large leaves. I will mist the dome and put it over the tray (w/ vents completely closed). I WILL NOT water the plugs again until they start to root. If the dome loses its condensation I'll re-mist the dome only.

I don't spray the clones directly.
I don't water the plugs.
I don't use a heat mat ever unless it's really really cold.

Once the clones survive the 1st initial days I'll start to crack the vents on the dome 1/4 turn...
As the plugs start to dry over the next week or so the clones start to bust fat white roots like crazy. I'll re-wet the cubes if they start to dry at this point, otherwise they go into their pots asap. I've had no problems drenching rooted clones with a 1.2 EC solution right in their rooter plugs until I get onto their next stages, but I've found the faster I get them into their next medium (typically coco) the better

Thats it. Been working great for me and haven't lost a single clone in quite a while. It's all in the temp.. Warm temps might promote faster rooting times, but also brings along the potential for pythium, bacterial nasties, etc.
