Good stuff, so the protozoa are eating the bacteria. The protozoa in turn will require nitrogen for reproduction, but they also help make the nitrogen that is in the medium available to plants by consuming the bacteria and then excreting ammonium, so they reduce the amount of harmful N to some degree, hold some in their physical structure and also, with the bacteria, convert harmful forms of N into plant-available forms. Looks like supplementing with sugar throughout the grow cycle is the way to go, as long as it isn't overdone.
