Trying to come up with an idea for a micro Waterfarm

Yep. I would like to have individualized containers for my moms, but I prefer hydroponics indoors, so soil planters are out of the question. If I can't figure this out I will just go the old DWC tub route and separate the plants' roots from time to time with a root trimming.

What I would like to do is come up with an idea that is similar to the Waterfarm, but smaller. All it is is a pot with drainage inside of a pot without drainage, and water is recirculated by the use of an air pump, then top-fed to the plants.

The obvious answer is to find a pot with no drainage that can house a net pot inside of it. But without bringing a net pot with me to the Container Store I don't know how to make sure they will match.

Has anyone done something like this before?

Do you have lays stax containers? they are like pringles but not pringles....

They are black on the inside, for starts. about 1 foot tall if not taller and about 3 inches round. I wish I had one here.

Hey thanks for the suggestion! I forgot I made this thread. Long story short, I have already decided to do micro DWC buckets instead, as they are easier to piece together. This is what I ended up with:

Sure. It's very simple...

Take any container with a removable lid, and cut a 3 inch hole through the lid. This will allow heavy duty net pots to rest flush on the lid, where they are glued into place.

Then, drill a tiny hole up near the top of the container, just large enough for the connecter of a check valve to fit through it. On the inside of the container, attach a length of 1/4" tubing to this check valve that will reach down to the bottom, where an airstone will be attached. On the outside of the container, attach another piece of tubing that will lead to an air pump.

That's it!

Make sure you use a container that is opaque to light. ;)

Hush, that's a very cool mini DWC set up. I was thinking of trying DWC for my next adventure.

One question though, do you need to top feed for a couple weeks until the roots reach into the water? or is the moisture inside the container enough? or do you just start with plants/clones with established roots that you can hang down?

Thanks thats a nice little setup I am trying to create a really small setup where I can just drop in a mini setup like yours and pull it out when the finish flowering. This way I can do a nice rotation of my clones.

Hush,
I have been fabbing up my own airlift drippers, like GH's water farms, for several years, using 3/8" pex pipe, and sharkbite "T" connectors. The only downside to these rings, which work as well or better than the GH ones, is the size you can make. The smallest I have attempted, fit into a 6" netpot, but only with some careful heat gun application.
The price per unit is only a couple bucks less than the kit from GH, but you can build them at 10pm on a Sunday, if Home Depot is open. If you are interested, I could post up some pics, in a mini how-to.
Fun project you have going, good luck!
Regards
