I use a chow mix, which for me, is about 70% coco and 30% hydroton. I used this last run in 2 gal smarties fed 5x a day. The root balls at the end of the cycle were literally solid giant hockey pucks of roots....you could shake till the cows came home and very little coco loosened up.

Hey Dans, i swapped up the setup and im currently exhausting out the window to see what kind temps i get. My room typically stays around 70 so exhausting out window and passive intake im hoping for 80-82 with both lights on

That would be a soil-less medium :D..

I use sunshine mix#4,happy frog, Ocean forest, all mixed together(sometimes I add coco). All of these will change the chemical makeup of the nutrient solution except coco.. im old school I use to just dig holes next to the fence drop in my plants fill with the dirt I took out. This will also change the chemical makeup.

definitely! ive been running coco for about a year and a half now. Ive used different soils before from the local nursery (gardners gold, ocean forest, etc) but like the vigor in coco when fed multiple times. next, im lookin at coco beds or even soil beds

The vigorous growth & being able to use smaller pots was just the plus side of switching for me . i was just happy that it came from inside the store & was bug free :dance013:

I almost wish i had found the powdered DE before i switched to coco so i coulda seen how well soils did without bugs lol

Yup just Epsom salt and water in that fancy bontanicare bottle. I just bought 12lbs of the stuff for 6 bucks, doesn't have a fancy label though.......

Sounds like you got beat to me. I just wouldnt feel right if I didnt pay 300% more than I should. :dunno:
Just for the sake of anyone thinking of getting that stuff with that label, it's floranectar not floranova. The nova is a one part full fertilizer.

Morning miscreants!

THIRd- is totally right. Good catch:tiphat:. I hate when i mess stuff up like that. It could really mess somebody up if they listened to me.

i use the same strength feed in veg no matter the size of the plant and i almost never have any def problems, same in flower too really,i always try and find the very least amount i can use thats effective...

im going to bet that the real cause of everyones mag def symptoms is going to have to do with how wet the root zone is or isnt...theres a whole interaction that goes on with sulpher and calcium and water within the medium and inside the plant and all that is related to how the plant is transpiring and root zone temps versus air temps...
what im trying to get across is that something like your local weather patterns changing can have a big influence on whats going on with your plants even indoors in a climate controlled space...and seasonal changes can also greatly effect your waters mineral balance and pH...
so while it looks like you are having a mag def problem im guessing its root cause is something else entirely...

I was actualy signing on to ask you if overwatering could cause those ugly mag def leaves.
Just wondering. I think Ive been slightly overwatering. Im still adjusting to the SS#4. My normal soil mix was much different in terms of water retention.

what is your medium comprised of ? coco? soil? rock lol..... My medium is a mix of stuff that looks like soil Bag says potting soil(happy frog)I have no other way of describing it a bunch a stuff all mixed together like peat,wc yada yada ...

soil-less based medium is just a medium that does not change the chemical makeup(inert). Happy frog changes that so mine is a soil medium.

The hallmark of hydroponic gardening is a soil-less growing medium... No soil! But plants need to be supported or held up somehow, right? We do this with soil-less media... inert, non-organic materials.
They do not add to or change the chemical makeup of the nutrient solution in any way. These substances are porous, light, and coarse, which allows oxygen and nutrients easy access to the plants roots. I know you have probably posted that info a few times I just don't remember I have a bad memory

http://www.hydroponics-simplified.com/hydroponic-growing-medium.html

I see totally what your saying, but I tend to agree with uncle on this one. Soil is by definition part of the earths crust. Once your remove it and take it indoors to grow something in, the same "soil" then becomes (growing) "medium".
Its like if you took water from a waterfall, and brought it home in a bottle. You don't have a waterfall anymore, just water. Maybe thats not the best example, but its the best I could think of in my extremely stoned state of mind:smoke::)

"soil1
soil/
noun
1.
the upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles.
"blueberries need very acid soil"
synonyms: earth, loam, dirt, clay, gumbo; More"

and from the US Department of agriculture's website:
"soil - (i) The unconsolidated mineral or organic material on the immediate surface of the Earth that serves as a natural medium for the growth of land plants. (ii) The unconsolidated mineral or organic matter on the surface of the Earth that has been subjected to and shows effects of genetic and environmental factors of: climate (including water and temperature effects), and macro- and microorganisms, conditioned by relief, acting on parent material over a period of time. A product-soil differs from the material from which it is derived in many physical, chemical, biological, and morphological properties and characteristics."

But it just semantics. And the definitons prolly vary. And Its not like it matter what ya call it. As long as it can grow weed in it!

try to keep the bedroom at70 to 72 & the tent with lights on & proper air flow should be only a few degrees above ambient temps .... so it should run 75 to 78 degrees & stay at 72 to 70 lights off .

you guys are way to techy. If it say's potting soil on the bag im going to call it soil or potting soil just like it says it is. To me it does not need to be so complicated.. I will still call it soil or potting soil.

alright guys....need some help. lights have been on for a bit now, and it appears as though the temps are hovering around 82. 3 passive intake vents open, and a 6" sucking through a scrubber and then out the window. how do i get these temps down a bit

I only have my window open about an inch so im thinking of opening that a little more. Also, i noticed the temp in my room has gone up a few degrees even with the exhaust running, so im thinken im trying to push too much through too little.

Thoughts, suggestions?
