Spider mites

Is it safe to use the soap and water mixture to kill spider mites growing hydroponically. I'm in the early vegetative state growing silver Kush and Sour Diesel

There are a lot of options; identify the pest, determine life cycle and environmental likes and dislikes of the pest, qualify/quantify the severity of your issue, determine which products to use chemical, biological, predator, fungal..etc (consider cost, environmental concerns, potency, efficacy, compatibility). Make sure to clean extensively all areas and tools that come in contact with the plants. There are many products that kill mites. In my experience oil preparations of azadirachtin work well for low pressure situations. I have not dealt with a full blown infestation. Its important to treat in accordance with the life cycle of your pest or you will never win. Its important to treat every single surface leaf top and bottom this takes a long time with a pump sprayer, atomizers work great for treating larger areas.

Check the spider mite sticky in this section. I would not use soap and water. I would buy some Insecticide Soap, so you know the right dosage etc. You could cover your rez. Good luck. -granger

Thank you for the helpful and positive feedback...It's a very confined grow area 3 feet by 2 feet, And the situation has just started And hasn't gotten out of hand yet. Both plants are in early veg state So I think I am going to try a couple of ladybugs...

If you going the predator route, ladybugs don't do a very good job on mites. I have used californicus and longipes predator mites with great success.

Green Lacewing larvae also work well, but use one or the other, cuz the Lacewing larvae will eat the predator mites along with the pest mites.

Neem Oil will work, as will soap on your 2 small plants for probably a lot less money than predators. Don't spray, dunk the plants for 100% coverage, repeat for 4 apps. 36 hours apart. Good luck. -granger

Thanks for the feedback...i decided to use the soap, spraying my plants everywhere 45min before my lights came on...no sign of activity but will need to keep spraying once a week to make certain. I'm also going to mist my plants w water inbetween applications?!

Be sure to spray entire container incl bottoms, floors, walls, doors. Dunking the foliage gives 100% coverage and rinses off many mites and eggs. I recommend 3 dunks 36 hours apart, then a 4th after 48. This kills any hatchlings before they have a chance to lay eggs. Weekly gives them a chance to lay more eggs. Good luck. -granger
