Germinating in Jiffy Pellets

Hello all. I've had my 10 seeds arrive on thursday. I'm new to coco growing and i've only germed with rockwool and soil before so this jiffy coco pellet thing is all new to me.

I put the seeds in a glass of tap water on friday 22:00 PM

20:00 on saturday (22 hours after) I clicked each seed on the waters surface with my finger resulting in every seed sinking down in the water.

That should mean they have gotten the water they need to be activated, right?

None of them had taproot coming out after the 22 hours in water, but I noted a little crack forming on the right side of the seed so I thought why the hell not put them already in coco pellets, as I did with my rockwools. I didnt let them form a tap root before planting to the cubes and they all germed fine-

I soaked the pellets in water ph ttested in 6.0 for 5 minutes. i then rather roughly forced all the excess water out of the pellets and planted the seeds 50mm-100mm deep in the pellets and shut them.

As of this monday, 20:00, none of them has sprouted. I have been misting them twice a day to keep them moist.

What could be the problem? or is there a problem? My last seeds have all sprouted in ~24 to 48 hours althouhgh no tap root showing in any of them.

THanks

What i did was to soak the seeds in water until they sank with a slight nudge.
Place them in some moist paper towels for a few days till tap root emerges.
Once the tap root is there i knew which way to place them in the Jiffy pellets.
Worked like a dream for me this way.

You may have planted them upside down or too deep?
I would gently root around in the pellet to see what is going on.

I just checked the tent and it seems that the first one has sproted :woohoo:

I only got my kitchen esl ~max 18w as light so far, that is if I can't use my 125w esl bulb in this early age? by not hanging it higher or something?

Just give them some time. I tend to plant directly into coco and they need a solid 100 hours before I begin to worry. But every time... every seed cracks.

Plants grow on their schedules. Not ours.

I use jiffy pellets, and like them a lot. I soak them till they swell completely, let drain, plant seed. I don't squeeze water out.

The one problem with them is that the holes they come with are inconsistent in depth. I like to plant them about 1/4" deep or about 6 or 7 mm. An inch = 25.4 mm. I am careful to fill the hole if it is deeper than that. I'm also careful to lay the seed on its side or with the point down.

100 mm would be like 4 inches. Are you sure of that measurement? If you are, you should gently pull/dig them out and replant at a much shallower depth, carefully turning them right side up.

Lots of people successfully use paper towels, but I consider it an unnecessary step that adds to the risk of damage. Good luck. -granger

Do it the way I use my jiffys: soak in water, let drain, put the seed in the pot (barely cover with a little of the peat) and you're golden. It's that easy, I planted 28 seeds a week ago and 28 have risen.

No need to soak in water. I use to have all sorts of problems germing seeds. Not anymore....its stupid simple....you just need to get a heat mat, rapid rooters, and a dome.

Pop your seed in to the rooter....cover with a tiny piece of rooter so no light gets in the hole. Put them in your dome..with the heatmat set to 78f....wait for like 4 days...and they will come alive.

I like to keep a bit of water in the bottom of the tray to keep the humidity up. The temp and humidity need to be constant.

There is no need to put seeds in water....make sure to wet the rooter ever so lightly before you put the dome on. I do this under flouros...they never seem to mind the light when sprouting.

Jiffy pellets suck IMHO

Even simpler than that. No heat mat or dome for me. Heat mats and wet conditions are a recipe for molds and disease.

Just drop in hole and leave it alone.

How did you succeed with your germination? My batch of jiffy 7c pellets are lethal to plant germination. pH of the runoff is lower than 4.0 and ec is 3,95m/S . Nothing is willing to grow root or take up nutrients, but with a thorough flushing with pH:d water I think it will be possible. I've run out of expendable seeds though, so had to switch back to soil with a 100% success rate...

I never have a problem but its best practice to keep them sodden. Squeezing them is just undoing all the aeration you created hydrating the pellets. (Once they're soaking and fully Hydrated dibber holes in the ones that haven’t formed holes and plant out).

They are great for cuttings!

Its best to ensure that the pellets are at a suitable pH for the type of plants your growing beforehand!

I use the half peat half coco jiffy 7's the 42mm type, straight tap water. No problems.

that's the same problem i had with the jiffys . they were way to hot for seedlings ! i even soaked them a few times & ran them under my tap water for a few minutes on each & i still thought they were to hot for young plants ... especially seedlings . maybe I got a bad batch or something ... i dunno . but i now just use 7 oz clear dixie cups of straight canna coco for seeds & clones ..... works great :)

If your going to prime the seeds in tissue paper. It's best to wait until they're this far along before planting to plugs.

Growing seeds is usually done in a seed tray. After germination you pick out, when they're this big, or indervidually when they're getting crowded.

Always plant into the final medium if possible or a lighter mix, a bed or pot is suitable and prefably plant into the final containers as this gives a better representation of the phenotype.

Here is a seedling performing the epigeal.

10 days later this.

And 35 days from seed this, ready to flower!

Mate Dave thank you for your input! Nice to know it can be done. I'll post my Failures and breakthroughs with the jiffy here later .....

The cheap pucks I got off amaz were like you guys say to hot for anything even cuts. Then at a nursery I found #7jiffies they work awesome. Watch out tho a lot of companies use #7 as a tag line but are not the real deal.
