Day 14 Bloom Update

Unit:

Side:

GBS:

ISP:

Data:

Two weeks in and budset is starting. Some are only tossing up a couple pistols, while others have definite buds. There is a creeping background reek coming from the grow that I can’t identify the culprit. The plants continue to elongate rapidly and expect that to continue for another week and a half.

The ISP is the shortest by far, but this I expected from an indoor F9+. RES and GBS are going to be our tallest, while CVS has the largest leaves and staying in the middle.

The plants are eating 30 - 40 ppm a day while the pH has been very stable with NO adjustment. White Aero roots continue to develop and a mat is beginning to form on the floor of the root chamber.

Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm and positive vibes.

Day 21 Bloom Update

Budset!:

CVS:

Mixed grow Madness:

Data:

I’ve added another level of trellis to the outside four rows and put the first level up in the middle. I have pruned only for control and light access, while pinching the tallest branches. I expect another couple days of stretch, and then it will be all about the bud. The plants have been slogging down the nutes and serious budset has begun.

However its not all sunshine and lollipops. In the “mixed madness” shot you can see an ISP locking out on the left, the wimpy RES on the right, and a perfectly healthy CVS in the middle. All of the ISP plants are hungry and have very little stretch compared to the others. I’m going to do my best to get at least a quality taste of these. Such is the nature of mixed grows with a shared res. You can’t please everyone. My compromise is adding some Cal-Mg to help the ISPs with their hunger. The problem with Cal-Mg is that it has significant Nitrogen and causes the pH to dive. I’m hitting them with small 20 ml shots and looking for improvement without stressing out the plants that look great ATM.

It’s getting stinky - a combination of garlicky-chemical poo is the best description of the aromas wafting from the unit.

Right now the most consistent strain with the least variability would be GBS. The CVS has the largest leaves. The RES has slowed down its stretch, while the ISP looks deadly - even though its quite short.

Some questions I get in pm have relevant information to the thread. Here are a couple I received recently.

I like your trellis - How is it built?

My trellis block design has evolved into one of my most important tools. Plant support is problematic with all these plants crammed together. Cargo netting doesn’t allow for individual plant control from top to bottom. It gets in the way during training and is a pain at harvest. Individually staking all the plants and branches takes up too much room.

The trellis block system allows for maximum flexibility and total control of every plant. Each block has 3 holes for dowel uprights, and 2 for the bungie cord that secures the block in place. With twist tie by the roll, you can be as simple or as wild as the plants dictate - maximizing their potential with the best use of light.

Trellis Block:

Crazy Trellis:

I noticed some numbers in circles and boxes on your last data sheet - What‘s that for?

Those are my timing cues. The numbers in boxes tell me how many days from the projected end of the grow. To ensure the next set of clones is ready to go when the unit is empty - they need to be started 30 - 35 days out depending on strain. Getting the timing right to make the best possible clones for the next run it what I use em for.

The numbers in circles tell me when its time to plant seeds for the project after next. So not only are the clones for the next run timed, but the seeds that need to be planted for the one after that are as well. It takes 110 - 90 days to produce rooted clones from day1 of planting, depending on the topping and sexing strategy, using my methods. From this you can see my next new project will begin soon! (Hint - Bunch of Bodhi)

I know this all sounds rather hyper anal, but really it’s a simple lazy way to ensure that units never sit empty and that the plants going to the bloom room are the best they can be.

Ive been having major issues this grow with buds floppin everywhere. I went and bought a bunch of bamboo stakes but this method doesnt do the job like I want.
Can you explain that block and dowel method abit more for me?
Was thinking about putting a ScrOG net on my cieling, and using string run from it to hold up my buds. That seemed like way to much work and then I seen those galvanized metal circle plant cages and this seemed like it would work well. Is there an advantage in running the string from the cieling over those plant cages?

Ditto...would like to know more details...I don't think I see the dowel in the trellis...I bought 50 stakes today with this post in the back of my mind...PVC trellis works but want to try a new setup.

Here are some other shots of the trellis in action:

The pattern I use is outside hole on the 4 outside rows and center hole for the center rows. This spreads the canopy out to its max.

From the uprights - lash a horizontal dowel. Each two headed plant in the row has both headed tied up.

From here you can build it however the plants dictate.

Hope this helps.

your attention to detail is second to none and you're threads are very informative. I ordered galactic grape after reading your 5lb thread; I'm just getting around to popping them this week. I wish I was half as organized as you. thanks for sharing your work

Day 28 Bloom Update

Unit:

GBS:

RES:

CVS:

Data:

Stretch is done and the buds are coming in nicely. Sweet garlic and funky stank permeate the room. The ISP plants are coming around and have outgrown the damaged leaves, while the runt RES continues to be unhappy.

Tomorrow is day 29 - Res change day. I change the res to start with a clean slate as nutrition requirements change for bud building. We will be PK boosting and backing off the biotics a little as our focus becomes about maxing the stack.

As always, your comments and questions are welcome.

Nice...thanks for the info on the dowels...crystal clear now...I have a low pressure aero table...thinking about how i could use the dowels on the table top...thought about glue but don't want permanent wood on a sometimes wet table...I think I will remove the legs from my PVC trellis...bungee the wood slats to the PVC frame...drill holes in the slats for the bamboo vertices.

Back to the dawg fight...looks like the CVS is winning.

Damn those are some hairy girls...beautiful....I want to try the aero tea but I don't have time to brew biweekly. One day when I retire I'll give it a go...for now I'll stick with silica, chiller@65F, aqua shield and Botanicare one part veg/flower...unless anyone has advice otherwise.

AK, looking good. Its amazing how little ph change you get compared to the synthetics. Do you feel you get enough PH drift? Plants sure look happy.

The pH will go lower in the second half of bloom. I was concerned about lack of drift, but the plants seem to like the slow change from 6.0 - 5.4 over the entire bloom time.

The res change is the point where PK boosting will help drive the pH lower. The biotics take a lot of the bounce out the numbers and really help the plants with their stability. This leads to less tip burn and healthier leaves longer into bloom.

The biggest advantage of S/B-A will be evident in the growth review.

Halfway Done Growth Review

Day 1:

Day 7:

Day 14:

Day 21:

Day 28:

In this series of pics, you can see the explosive growth of the first 28 days. I was most concerned with RES overgrowing the unit, but it has stopped at a perfect height - looks like 4 phenos are in contention. The GBS has been the most lush and vigorous, with the least variation - six of them looks like contenders. CVS has the most garlic smell and the perfect height, however a couple phenos have exhibited the “ragged top” mutation. There are 3 standout phenos. The ISPs have suffered from being slightly behind the group and then having very little stretch. They have recovered from their hunger and two have the look and smell of something special.

There are 3 plants that just aren’t happy. 1 RES and 2 ISP are just growing wimpy and we will drag them across the finish line, trying to at least get a taste.

So far, I’d say things have gone pretty good. Part of the Darwinian pressure in this test is my bloom room environment and nutes. I will adjust for the right plant, but winners should be able to thrive within my basic environmental spectrum.

On to the second half!

AK, just a quick question. When you transfer from your cloner to your aeroflo do u prune
the root length any? If so to what length. Thanks OG

My clones have a lot of roots by the time they go to the bloom room. I carefully disentangle the roots, but inevitably there are broken loose bits. I just lightly pinch and pull the roots through my fingers and take off any roots that don't belong to the plant. I cut my netpots so that a large root bundle can go through. I trim off roots at about a foot long. The main thing is to plant healthy rooted plants with a minimum of material that could rot.

Mixed Grow Madness:

Data:

The most important event of this week is the res change. In a straight synthetic nute grow, I recommend bi-weekly res changes. However in S/B-A only one change is needed - right at the end of stretch. The reason is that nutrient requirements change at this point, so we want to start with a clean slate. Our focus is now tipping the scales towards PK and away from N.

The Aero Tea dose is now cut in half as well(now 1 pint). AT always has a small N load and with the root mass is fully colonized, the reduced dose is just right for the second half of bloom. Organic nutes are still being supplied in adequate amounts to keep everyone happy and stinky.

PK boosting is tough on the leaves. I boost until I see slight tip burn for unknown strains. This and the reduction of N leads to the leaves losing some of their deep green and getting a little raggedy looking with time. But our focus is on buds and in this transition their requirements take precedence.

There are several beautiful plants to look at. It was hard to pick bud shots for sure. But more learning happens when things aren’t so perfect. In the mixed grow madness shot you can see our problem plants. The ISP has grown past its damaged leaves and is producing a nice bud. However the runty RES is still droopy and has some yellowing leaves. In a grow like this its very difficult to get decent recovery, so I’ll take it as a win to go 1 and 1.
