Cop Busted for Selling Pot from Squad Car

A Sheriff's Deputy in Newton County, Georgia was arrested September 19 after he allegedly sold marijuana to an undercover federal agent from his squad car while in full uniform and wearing his gun. That foolish move got Mathis saddled with the charge of “carrying a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking offense” along with being charged for distributing pot.

The feds contend Deputy Darrell Mathis, 40, dealt from his officially marked squad car on a regular basis and that he sold bud to both a confidential informant and an undercover FBI agent between May and September of 2013. Mathis admitted to selling between 10 to 15 pounds of pot every week.

On August 8, Mathis allegedly sold a pound of pot to a narc and then set up a deal in which he agreed to “transport marijuana or cocaine to Alabama or North Carolina” for the undercover agent.

The criminal complaint alleges Mathis went as far as to display his deputy badge and gun at that meeting, telling the undercover agents, "Don't worry, I'm on your side." Little did Mathis know that those he was selling to were not on his side.

Mathis' bust left his department scrambling to save face, as Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown stated the obvious on Friday: “This is an embarrassment to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, as well as law enforcement in general.”

Mathis' shameless style was responsible for his downfall – he allegedly had large amounts of pot in the open in his Lithonia, Georgia apartment, which was witnessed by a confidential source who informed two local cops who then turned to the FBI in April.

Mathis, who has been a Newton County deputy for five years, appeared before a federal judge on Thursday and was released on bond. He faces five years in federal prison for pot dealing and a maximum sentence of life in prison for carrying his firearm while trafficking.

Living in an apartment, makes me think he wasn't getting the profit form 10lbs a week. Five years as a deputy getting paid and moving 10+ lbs a week. Where is his super fat bank account? Or was this guy working for someone else???

Those pigs who decided go to the feds seem hard to believe. Aren't almost all police departments corrupt? Why the hell would they open up a shitstorm for themselves?

What is the real story here? This one cop goes down and now the feds close the book on this little hick police department? My money is on that whole fucking place is corrupt as they come.

Really...

No. Wait. REALLY???

This guy...as bad as I hate to say it...the hypocrite that he likely is...

Set the man free. No PERSON deserves to be put in jail for a plant. NOT ONE. No matter who they are.

Could be a grower with a badge, fighting the system from the inside - certainly getting his take for sure. Now, just another victim to a system designed to punish those who find a way to get a leg up...

The badge is not implicitly evil - it's what power does to people that contorts the badge. This guy - not sure what side of the line he falls on daily - but, seems he is one of us, even if he does smell a bit like bacon.

so they kill folks in custody and get a suspension on full pay while it's swept under the carpet, they sell a plant and face life in jail. What a wonderful world.

The plant is irrelevant, he deserves to go to jail for using a badge and his police authority to break the law without fear of consequence. The guy obviously thought that being a deputy made him untouchable, we need to show him and all other law enforcement officers otherwise.

but will he really do any time or just get a slap on the wrist. those in power that abuse it deserve twice the time . so he should automatically do 10 years as far as I am concerned. how many dealers did he rob or blackmail to get that weed.i have had to deal with scumbag cops when younger. crooked as hell and looking for those on paper to threaten . Daytona beach had a bunch. fucking cops would rob one dealer and then make their guy sell it for em or risk returning to prison.i hate cops all of em

Totally man, it doesn't bother me in the slightest that a cop was selling weed. It's the abuse of power we gave to him that is the real crime.

It's like the president cheating on his wife. We don't give a crap that he got a blowjob under his desk, it's the disrespect shown to every voter and honest citizen that is the real offense.

Yeah I don't hate on the guy either. I would hate if he busted people smoking and dealing weed, now that is hypocritical.

Guy has some balls. He is gonna lose his job and will have to be a criminal without the protection of the law from now on. Plus think of the embarassment not for the precinct, but for him.

Selling cocaine is a nono in my book though. The report says he was supposed to transport cocaine OR marijuana. Not even sure which.

I would never buy from a cop, but then again... if he had good weed and a good price.. lol why not ? I would never SELL to a cop though. Buying weed from a cop for further sale sounds like a bad idea too.

I also don't get why he admitted to selling 10-15lb.
I only did it a couple times sarge, I swear...
