LEDs on Light Rail, pointless ?

Hi everyone, and thanks for dropping by !

I am a happy light rail user, and Im thinking of getting some led lights for veg to start with, maybe for flowering later too.
They would replace a dual 600w cool tube (MH for veg, HPS for flowering).

Is there any point in using a light rail with led lights ?

My first impressions are listed below, but I would like other peoples thoughts, and (maybe) experience if any.

-Light rails are very useful with dissipation of heat emitted from HIDs, thus, lamps can be put closer. Leds dont benefit from this.

-As led panels have multiple diode, they wouldnt benefit as much as HIDs from movement, in terms of multiple angles and spread of light.

Hence it might be wiser to use less powerful but more panels covering the entire area, rather than a powerful panel on a rail.

Do you think there is any point in using a light rail with led panels ?

As you stated, our LED's have a very limited spread angle of 60 degrees which is what enables them to penetrate your plants. Since there is not much lateral spread, if the light moved away from one area of plants it would essentially be without light. MeanBean has developed a very efficient way (in my opinion) of using a light mover with LED's, but his only turns on once every 12 hours. He's blooming two sets of plants under a single 126W, and should be one of the first people to hit 2 grams per watt with our light.

I like to try out things and my latest project is a 300w led under a lightmover in a tent 140*280*200cm filed with vegging plants and they seems to grow well under one lamp, but in flowering have hang up more leds. :dance013:

The theory is: smaller lens angle = deeper penetration, but when the canopy is full of leafs there is no worthwhile penetration

Wider (or no) lenses provide better spread over the canopy, PLUS, the lack thereof allows the grower to keep lights closer to the canopy, a net gain

Let's say you are using an A 51 panel which provides a 2 x3 footprint, but your tent is 4ft long with plants wall to wall. Yes, a light mover would be helpful

I am on my second grow using 4ft led tubes (this time from the onset of decent leaf structure to handle the extra photons)

Individual engines are < 0.2w, but the total tube output is 18w, meaning lots of tiny engines, evenly covering the 4 ft length

These tubes will be replaced with 2 @ ~ 50w 2 x 2 panels of similar design. I will likely move the tubes below the canopy for side lighting, which is the best way to fill out the undergrowth

Come by for the show. Almost ready to lower the light cycle

If you already own that light rail, use it. If not, don't waste your money to buy it ; buy a new led light instead.

I think having these beam spotted is the perfect response to LEDs not being coherent light.

This way you can spread all the flux's of LEDs across each other's beam patterns.
